Eight Is Enough, Pirates Earn First Win over Penguins Since 2012

Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates (24-13-1-0) skated to a 2-1 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (28-10-0-1) Friday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. The win was the Pirates' sixth in a row and first over the Penguins since December 8, 2012

In a heart-racing first period, the Pirates jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Brett Olson was on doorstep when he tapped-in a Brent Regner shot at the side of Matt Murray's net. Regner and Garrett Wilson were credited with the assists on Olson's 7th of the season.

A play that looked rather benign when it began proved to be the game winner for the Pirates. Murray sent the puck around the net and Wade Megan cut the puck off. Megan's sharp-angle snipe at 9:45 of the first would be the all the Pirates needed.

Wilkes-Barres/Scranton's lone goal of the game was courtesy of a Clark Seymour slap-shot at 1:26 of the second period.

The 2-1 final stands as the 13th-straight victory for the Pirates' goaltender Mike McKenna, who stands four wins away from tying Jhonas Enroth's 74 career wins with Portland. McKenna stopped 38 shots in the win, bringing the Gorham Saves for Charity to $4,890 so far this season.

The Pirates will look to gain ground on the Atlantic Division leading Penguins, as the two teams face-off again Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Cross Insurance Arena. Be one of the first 1,000 fans through the doors to receive a Brent Regner poster courtesy of the Portland Press Herald
