Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Brian O'Neill scored two goals in just over two minutes as the Monarchs prevailed over Worcester, 5-1, in their annual Education Day game before a crowd of 8,296. It extended Manchester's season-long winning streak to six straight games.
"The offense is a direct relation to our defense," Head Coach Mike Stothers said. "We went from defense to offense and scored. I think you create opportunities by getting a good commitment by our guys in our zone."
The Monarchs (11-4-0-0) outshot the Sharks (8-6-1-0) 40 to 23. Although they had 18 shots in the first, only one beat Worcester's J.P. Anderson.
Zach O'Brien started the scoring in the first period with his first goal of the season on a low stick side goal off a pass from Nick Shore at 10:47. Shore started the play carrying the puck through the neutral zone after goalie J.F. Berube saved a shot from Worcester's Chris Tierney.
After Derek Forbort was called for holding in the second period, O'Neill tallied an unassisted short-handed goal off a shot from the top left circle at 7:58.
Although Worcester answered back with a five-hole goal from Evan Trupp at 9:31, 44 seconds later the Monarchs quickly recovered the two goal lead with O'Neill's second goal of the night at 10:15 with assists from Nick Shore and O'Brien.
The Monarchs solidified the win with two additional goals in the third. Colin Miller found the back of the net with a one-timer goal off a pass from Justin Auger and Jordan Weal at 5:59 in the third period. In the final seconds of the game, Scott Sabourin centered a pass to Kevin Gravel at 19:46 for his first career AHL goal.
The Monarchs are on the road for games in Binghamton and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this weekend before they return to the Verizon Wireless Arena on November 28 against the Bridgeport.
Notes:
* Manchester's six-game winning streak marks its longest since another six-game run from April 7-20, 2013. * The Monarchs improved to 10-0-0-0 when leading after two periods. * Andrew Bodnarchuk made his season debut today, registering three shots. * Brian O'Neill (2 goals, assist) and Nick Shore (2 assists) have each had at least one point in six straight games, tied for the longest point streak on the club this season. * With 40 shots today, Manchester has tallied at least 40 shots in each of its last three games.
