St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps continued their strong two-way play on Wednesday night and defeated the visiting Toronto Marlies 3-2 at Mile One Centre.

Carl Klingberg potted the game-winner in the second period and Eric O'Dell and Kyle MacKinnon added singles as the IceCaps extended their point streak to four games.

The IceCaps found the back of the net near the midway point of the opening period as JC Lipon hit a streaking O'Dell heading toward the net on an odd-man rush. He placed a perfect cross-crease pass on O'Dell's tape, leaving him a tap-in for his seventh goal of the season at 9:22 of the first.

St. John's pushed the lead to two just over a minute later as MacKinnon parked in front of Marlies starter Antoine Bibeau and deflected an Austen Brassard point shot behind the goaltender, with Julien Brouillette earning the second assist at 10:36.

The Marlies cut the lead to one near the middle of the second period as Brett Findlay took a pass from Connor Brown as he was heading down the right wing and fired off a quick wrist shot. IceCaps starter Connor Hellebuyck got a piece but it trickled behind him and into the net to give the Marlies their first goal of the series at 10:54.

The IceCaps restored their two-goal lead late in the second as Klingberg finished a beautiful one-timer on a pass from John Albert with just under a minute remaining in the period to enter the second intermission with some momentum.

Greg McKegg gave the crowd at Mile One Centre a scare with his sixth goal of the year with just over two minutes remaining in the game but the IceCaps were able to hold on to come away with the win and their first two-game winning streak this season.

Hellebuyck stood tall for his second game in a row and made 28 saves to seal the deal, including a breakaway pad stop on Carson McMillan in the opening minutes of the final period. His two starts against the Marlies represent his finest hockey as an IceCap to date as he kicked out all but two of the 53 shots he faced over his two starts against Toronto.

St. John's will now hit the road for their next five games starting on Saturday, Nov. 22 against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (8:35 p.m. NST). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com, 930AM and www.ahllive.com.
