Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Jeff Zatkoff made 23 saves to record his first shutout of the season, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 2-0 win against the Portland Pirates on Wednesday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. With the win the Penguins (10-7-1-0, 21 points, first in East Division) snapped a two-game losing streak, while the Pirates (8-9-0-0, 16 points, fourth in Atlantic Division) dropped their second consecutive contest.
After a relatively quiet first period, it was the Penguins who found a way to break the deadlock, thanks to their special teams play in the second. Andrew Ebbett took advantage of back-to-back tripping calls on Darian Dziurzynski and Dylan Reese to pop home his fifth goal of the season off of a pretty feed from Bryan Rust. Those linemates now rank first and second on the team in scoring with 13 and 11 points respectively.
Zatkoff stood tall against several Portland chances in the second frame, but was up to the task, stopping all 12 shots he was faced with in the period. He turned away an additional seven over the last 20 minutes of play, and could finally take an extra breath when Tom Kuhnhackl easily planted the puck into an empty net with 45.5 seconds left in the game to ensure the Penguins victory.
The Penguins netminder evened his record at 4-4-0-0 on the season, while his counterpart, Mike McKenna, stopped 14 shots and saw his record fall to 3-7-0-0 on the season.
The Pens will travel to Albany for a Friday night meeting with the Devils, before returning home to host the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday night. The first 5,000 fans at Saturday's game will receive a Penguins team photo, courtesy of Bayard Printing.
Individual tickets for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena Box Office, online at TicketMaster.com, or by calling 800-745-3000.
