One Point and the Lead
March 30, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
A 3-2 overtime loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede Friday still yielded a standings point which gives the Waterloo Black Hawks sole control of first place in the United States Hockey League Western Conference.
The road result at Sanford Premier Center puts the Hawks one point ahead of the Fargo Force and Omaha Lancers, and two up on Sioux Falls.
Griffin Lunn scored the winning goal at 2:55 of overtime, snapping a shot to the twine from near the top of the left circle.
At the same end of the rink, the first goal of the night had been recorded when Garrett Wait stretched the ice with a long pass at 5:39 of the first period. Wait connected with Ben Copeland at the Stampede blue line, and in alone, Copeland beat Mikhail Berdin with a backhander between the Russian netminder's pads.
Sioux Falls scored in transition to tie it at 11:05. Cameron Burke moved through the left wing circle as he lifted a wrist shot past Matej Tomek's glove.
The teams exchanged goals again in the second, with the Stampede going to the lead at 2:20. A faceoff win created the chance for Kevin Conley to fire a quick shot to the top corner.
Waterloo tied it again at 9:56. Bobby Trivigno pushed a pass from behind the Sioux Falls goal, and Matt Koopman cashed on a low try from the right circle hashmark.
Berdin made 31 saves for the win; the Hawks outshot their opponents 33-25.
With Friday's game now in the past, five of six nights now remaining on the Waterloo schedule will feature the team playing on home ice at Young Arena. The first of those dates is Saturday versus the Dubuque Fighting Saints. The 7:05 Dupaco Cowbell Cup matchup will feature the Hawks' first-ever Golf Ball Drop Extravaganza. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
