Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders scored in the first and last minute of the third period to defeat the Waterloo Black Hawks 2-1 at Young Arena Saturday.
It was the second head-to-head meeting settled with a late goal and a 2-1 final score. On January 17th in Cedar Rapids, the RoughRiders broke a 1-1 tie with under two minutes to play to claim that decision.
During the rematch at Young Arena, Cedar Rapids erased a 1-0 lead 16 seconds out of the second intermission. A turnover in the neutral zone precipitated a three-on-one rush; back-and-forth passing between Justin Graf and Henry Lechner set up Graf for the equalizer from the right circle.
Then with 31.3 seconds left in regulation, Connor Davis pulled the puck off the right boards and sent it toward the net. Cooper Simon redirected it in for the game-winner.
Drew Waterfield had bagged the only goal during the first two periods at 2:36 of the second. Travis Lefere swooped behind the RoughRider net to swipe the puck from Hawke Huff, then came back to the slot to try a shot. Waterfield was there to swat in the rebound of that chance from close range.
Hawks goalie Dane Callaway took the loss despite 28 saves. Ryan Cameron was the winning netminder with 24 stops.
Next Friday and Saturday, the Black Hawks host the Youngstown Phantoms during A Weekend with the Black Hawks, presented by John Deere. Special discounted tickets are available for John Deere employees, and the patriotic John Deere jerseys the team will wear go up for auction after Saturday's game to benefit the Waterloo Career Center. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
