One Goal Gives Petes Shutout over Gens

January 10, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release

The rivalry continued between the Petes and the Generals in Peterborough tonight. Although the Generals shutdown the Petes the last three times they met this season, the Petes put up a good fight and came out with the 1-0 win.

About four minutes into the game Hunter Smith took a big hit from Cameron Lizotte, which put Smith out of the game. A flustered Generals line led to a breakaway by Hunter Garlent who put the Petes on the scoreboard first. Chris Carlisle was given the first penalty of the night for interference, followed by a penalty to coach DJ Smith for unsportsmanlike conduct, which was served by Michael McCarron. Despite a five on three advantage for the Petes, they were shutdown by the Generals. A too many men call to Greg Betzold and a check from behind penalty to Josh Maguire gave Oshawa two power plays of their own in the first but they weren't able to get on the scoreboard. The Petes were also given a four-minute power play after Josh Brown sat for a check to the head and unsportsmanlike conduct but the score remained 1-0 for Peterborough after 20.

The Generals went straight to work on the penalty kill leading into the second and were able to defend their rivals. Kenny Appleby was the star of this period with some huge stops on his opponents. Matthew Mancina did his fair share of work as well in the second after the Generals started to up the pressure on the Petes. Peterborough went on their fifth power play 16:25 into the period with Michael Turner in the box for interference, however the Generals killed it off again. Nearing the end of the second, Dakota Mermis was given a five minute major for slew footing. The second wrapped up with the Generals trailing 1-0 and shots on net 9-6 for Peterborough.

Oshawa entered the third killing off the remainder of the Mermis penalty and they did just that. The Generals had a good power play opportunity to tie the game up after Lizotte sat for tripping but Mancina didn't let anything by. Oshawa continued to put the pressure on Mancina, and with only 19 seconds left it looked like the Generals were about to bounce back. Matt Spencer received two minutes for tripping, which made it six on four with Appleby at the bench. While the Generals managed to put some final shots on Mancina, the Petes held their 1-0 lead and took the win. Tonight's win gave Mancina his first shutout of the season.

Will Petschenig and Mitchel Vande Sompel were out of the line up due to injuries. However, Riley Stillman, a Peterborough native, played his fourth game with the Generals tonight in front of his hometown.

After a loss to Kingston on the road last night and falling to the Petes tonight, the Generals are looking for a big win tomorrow on home ice when they take on the Mississauaga Steelheads at 6:05p.m. To purchase tickets, click here, visit the GM Centre Box Office, or call 1-877-436-8811.
