Bulls Shut Out by Rangers

The Belleville Bulls are 0-1 on the road to start the New Year. The first back-to-back road trip of 2015 started in Kitchener on Friday night as the Bulls were looking to snap a two game losing skid. Kitchener goaltender Jake Paterson who was acquired from the Saginaw Spirit on Thursday afternoon made his Rangers debut and recorded his second shutout of the season as the Rangers defeated the Bulls 5-0.

Toronto, native Charlie Graham was peppered with pucks early and often as Kitchener opened the first period with a couple good scoring chances. Once again the Bulls found themselves behind early on the road, as the Rangers were the first to light the lamp. Rookie centre Connor Bunnaman buried his 5th of the season just 4:30 into the period. Ryan MacInnis picked up a helper on the first goal of the game.

The Rangers were handed their first power play of the contest when Stepehen Harper was called for holding at 10:23. Kitchener made the visiting Bulls pay as Sweden product Gustaf Franzen scored a minute into the man advantage to give his team the two-goal lead. Rookie Adam Mascherin and over ager Max Iafrate were credited with the assists.

Later in the period while killing a Bulls power play, the Rangers added another when Darby Llewellyn broke in alone and beat netminder Graham short handed to make it 3-0 Kitchener. The goal marks Llewellyn's second shorty of the campaign. Shots favoured the home team 15-9 after the first 20 minutes.

The second frame was much more calm but still saw the Rangers add to their lead. Just over the way mark of the frame, Llewellyn potted his second of the game from Mason Kohn and Nick Magyar pick up the assists on the play. One second before the end of the period, Mascherin buried a centering pass from Brandon Robinson to put his club up 5-0 as both teams headed to their respective dressing rooms. Kitchener led 40-18 in shots and 5-0 on the scoreboard after two periods.

Rookie Connor Hicks replaced Graham to begin the final stanza. Both clubs had a man advantage in the period, including a 4-minute power play for the Bulls but neither could capitalize. Paterson, the Red Wings prospect was awarded the first star as he stopped all of Bellevile's 29 shots. Charlie Graham made 35 saves in 40 minutes of action while make stopped 16 pucks. Kitchener also dominated on the shot clock 56-29.

The Bulls continue their weekend road trip with a stop in Owen Sound on Satuday night.
