Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Ed Lucas and David Lough delivered key homers early, and the Omaha bullpen blanked Round Rock as the Royals defeated the Express 10-4 in Pacific Coast League action Saturday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (30-40) have lost nine of their last 10 since a season-best four-game winning streak. The Royals (37-30) have won each of the series' first two games and hold a 7-3 lead in the season series, winning five of the last six.
Lucas' two-run shot in the second erased Round Rock's 1-0 lead, and the Royals never trailed again. Lough added a three-run homer in the third, giving Omaha a 5-1 lead.
Round Rock got back in the game with a run in the bottom of the third on Chris Johnson's RBI double. Jason Castro delivered a two-out, two-run homer in the fifth to pull the Express within a run at 5-4. It was Round Rock's first home run since June 12; the six-game drought was the longest stretch without a home run this season for the Express.
However, that was as close as the Express would get as Federico Castaneda and Josh Rupe combined to shutout Round Rock on three hits the rest of the way. Omaha pulled away with a three-run eighth on consecutive doubles from Kila Ka`aihue and Scott Thorman; Ka`aihue's plated two runs, and he scored on Thorman's. Alex Gordon delivered a two-out, two-run single in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Castaneda (3-0) picked up the victory in relief. He tossed 3.1 scoreless innings on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Rupe worked around a one-out Johnson single for a scoreless ninth. Starter Manauris Baez did not escape the fifth inning; he allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout over 4.2 innings.
Starter Shane Loux (2-3) took the loss for the Express; he surrendered five runs, four earned, on four hits and a walk with one strikeout over 6.0 innings, his longest outing of the season. Evan Englebrook was touched for three runs, two earned, on three hits and a walk with two punch outs over 2.0 innings. T.J. Burton allowed a pair of runs on two walks and a hit in the ninth.
Johnson, Brian Bogusevic, Matt Kata and Drew Locke all had two-hit nights for the Express. Bogusevic gave Round Rock an early lead with an RBI double in the first.
Lough and Thorman each had two hits for the Royals. Lough also had three RBI, while Gordon, Ka`aihue and Lucas each had two RBI.
Round Rock and Omaha continue the four-game series Sunday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch. Right-hander Josh Banks (7-5, 3.03 ERA) gets the nod on the mound for the Express. Right-hander Bryan Bullington (3-0, 2.15 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Royals.
