Zephyrs Hold Off Redbirds

MEMPHIS, TN - New Orleans topped Memphis 5-3 Sunday afternoon at AutoZone Park.

The Zephyrs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Memphis scratched out a pair of runs to close the gap to one run on Jim Rapoport's RBI-single in the fourth inning. However, former Redbird Hector Luna extended the Z's lead in the fifth with a two-out, solo homer and Danny Richar's RBI-double in the sixth gave New Orleans a two-run lead. The Redbirds rallied to get the tying run on base with a pair of walks in the ninth off Zephyrs closer Jose Veras before the big right-hander struck out Allen Craig to end the game. Luna led the Z's with three hits and three RBI on the afternoon. Kevin Howard and Bryan Anderson each had two hits for the ‘Birds in the loss.

New Orleans starter Tom Mastny earned the win with five solid innings of work. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits for his first win of the year. Memphis starter P.J. Walters took the loss giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks across five innings. Veras notched his second save for the Zephyrs working around the two walks in the ninth.

The Redbirds and Zephyrs play tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. Brandon Dickson gets the early call for the home team and will face New Orleans lefty Sean West. It will be Moe's Monday tomorrow with fans receiving one-dollar off ticket prices with a receipt from the Moe's Poplar location.
