Omaha Storm Chasers July 3rd Game Notes

July 3, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

LAST NIGHT'S LOSS: Omaha did not score first for the first time this roadtrip but did lose a lead to drop their fifth straight game 4-3. Omaha is one loss shy of their longest losing streak of 2014, which was six game against New Orleans and Iowa on April 24 through the first game of the May 1 doubleheader. Ryan Verdugo's third quality start in his last five outings was spoiled.

OMAHA ALL-STARS: Paulo Orlando, Francisco Pena and Spencer Patton were elected 2014 PCL All-Star starters, the first PCL All-Star bid for each of the players. Omaha is one of four teams with three players on the team (Iowa, Oklahoma City, Tacoma). Orlando is the first Brazilian born player to be elected the Triple-A All-Star Game, Pena leads all PCL catchers with 14 homers and Patton is third in the PCL with 14 saves (leads Omaha relievers with 47 strikeouts).

A-A-RON: Aaron Brooks is one of 11 PCL starters with 7+ wins, and of that group Brooks has the fewest starts at 12. Omaha is 10-2 in Brooks' starts (8-1 since May 1). In his first nine starts, Brooks did not allow more than three runs but has done so in his last three outings (Omaha is 3-0 in those games).

I-OWN-A: Omaha has lost 16 of their last 18 games at Principal Park dating back to the final three games of the 2012 season (1-7 last year). If Omaha loses tonight, they will have back-to- back 1-7 seasons against a conference or division foe for the first time since the PCL adopted a consistent schedule format in 2005. Home and road, Omaha has lost 18 of 23 games vs Iowa.

FIVE-GAME SWEEP: The current series is Omaha's 41st series of five games or more in their PCL history, and they have never been swept in any of the previous 40 series.

NO LEAD IS SAFE: All six losses on the roadtrip Omaha has held a lead at some point. Over half of Omaha's 42 losses (22) have been fall-from-ahead, including 14 of 23 road losses.

NOT A RELIEF: Since Omaha's seven-game winning streak on June 11-17, the Storm Chasers have posted a record of 3-11 in the last 14 games. In those 14 games, Omaha relievers have given up 46 earned runs in 49.2 innings (8.34 ERA). This comes after the Chasers bullpen allowed only 18 earned runs over a stretch of 93.2 innings from May 22 to June 17 (1.72 ERA).

TO ALL FIELDS: Since his average dipped to a season-low .253 on June 17, Matt Fields has totaled 19 hits in his last 12 games (which includes his current nine-game hit streak), which has raised his average to .277 (the highest it has been since May 13 at Memphis).

CHECK THE RECORD: Johnny Giavotella still sits at 225 RBI for his Omaha career (360 games), which is tied for the 7th most in team history with Rondin Johnson (1984-1988).
