Oklahoma City Comets News Release
LAST GAME: Brian Gordon combined with two relievers to shutout Nashville on five hits in Oklahoma's 2-0 win Thursday evening. Gordon allowed three hits over seven innings, and got solo home runs from Joaquin Arias and Chris Shelton. Kea Kometani allowed a hit in the eighth, while Bill White allowed a hit in the ninth en route to his fifth save of the season. The trio of pitchers combined for the RedHawks' eighth shutout of the year, three of which have come against the Sounds.
LEADOFF LONG BALL: Joaquin Arias became the first RedHawk to leadoff a game with a home run since
Esteban German accomplished the feat on June 6, 2005 versus Albuquerque. Arias hit the second pitch of last night's game out of the park to provide the eventual winning run in the shutout. The RedHawks infielder entered play this season with 16 career Minor League home runs, hitting no more than five in any one season.
SAVING THE GAME:
Oklahoma has recorded saves in each game during this series, marking only the second time this season that the RedHawks have recorded a save in three straight games. Oklahoma also earned saves in three straight games against Albuquerque from April 11 through April 13 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark. Other than those two brief save streaks, the RedHawks have not recorded a save in back-to-back games all season.
PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES:
Oklahoma's 14 wins against Nashville this season equal 21% of their overall win total. The RedHawks victory last night enabled the team to move above .500 against the Sounds in the all-time series with 88 wins compared to 87 losses, and brought the club within one game of .500 in Nashville with a 43-44 road record all-time. Of Oklahoma's 140 home runs this season, 11% have come against Nashville (16). The RedHawks 11 home runs at Greer Stadium are the most Oklahoma has hit at any one road park in 2008, surpassing the ten long balls hit at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque.
EXTENDED:
Ryan Roberts and Ben Harrison knocked doubles last night to extend their hitting streaks to ten and seven games respectively. The ten-game run by Roberts is his second this season, matching his hitting streak from May 19 though May 30. It also matches the fourth longest streak of the year by an RedHawk. Harrison went hitless in his first three Triple-A games but has hit safely in each games since, batting .400 over his last seven games. The Oklahoma outfielder also has the second longest current on-base streak at nine games (one behind Roberts).
ON THE SPOT... AGAIN:
Steve Rowe will make a spot start tonight. Rowe began the season in Oklahoma's bullpen, but was used in a consistent starting role in June. Rowe is 2-4 with a 4.98 earned run average as a starting pitcher this season, and has gone 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts against Nashville this year. Rowe also made on relief outing against the Sounds, allowing one earned run on two hits in one inning of work on April 10, prior to winning back-to-back starts on June 12 and June 17.
DOT-DOT-DOT:
Oklahoma's magic number is 12... Casey Benjamin went hitless in four at bats last night and saw hit season-high hitting streak broken at six games... Joaquin Arias had three hits ion last night's win for his 40th multi-hit game of the season, matching Nelson Cruz for the team lead... Oklahoma will face Chris Narveson for the fifth time this season. The RedHawks have tallied seven runs on 13 hits over ten and two thirds innings against the southpaw, sending him to two of his 12 losses.
ON THE AIR: Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand.
