May 8, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Sacramento River Cats (17-15) at Oklahoma RedHawks (21-12)
Games 34 & 35 | May 8, 2008 | AT&T Bricktown Ballpark | Oklahoma City, OK
Radio: Fox Sports Radio AM 1340, RedHawks Radio Network | Jim Byers & Adam Marco
TODAY'S MATCHUP
Game One: LH Gio Gonzalez (0-2, 5.00) vs. RH Dustin Nippert (1-0, 0.00)
Game Two: RH Kirk Saarloos (3-1, 3.91) vs. RH Elizardo Ramirez (4-2, 4.11)
LAST GAME: Oklahoma scored the game's final four runs and rallied to beat Sacramento 5-3. Doug Mathis struggled early but finished well, pitching eight solid innings while striking out six. Mathis retired the final 13 batters he faced before getting lifted for a reliever. The Rivers Cats held leads of 2-0 and 3-1 at most, but the RedHawks answered each time and plated two runs in the home half of the eighth to take the win. Kevin Richardson had three hits and was a triple shy of a cycle, and Kevin Mench and John Mayberry also drove in runs.
MATHIS LEADS THE PACK: Doug Mathis was the first pitcher in the PCL to win three games, and subsequently the first to win four. On his third attempt to win his fifth, the RedHawks right-hander also became the first in the league to win five games. Seven other pitchers, including Oklahoma's Elizardo Ramirez, are tied with four wins apiece.
POSTPONED: Oklahoma had its first game postponed this season yesterday. The RedHawks had the fortune of playing every time they went to the ballpark this season up until Wednesday. Oklahoma did have one game shortened by rain, however. The RedHawks game with the Nashville Sounds on April 9 was called after six innings due to inclement weather. April 9 just so happened to be a Field Trip Day at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark and was also an 11:05 am start.
ERA BUMP: The RedHawks remained second in the league in team ERA after yesterday's PCL action. Oklahoma moved from fourth in the league with a 4.22 earned run average heading into Tuesday's series opener to second following the game with a 4.15 mark. Salt Lake is the only team in PCL with an ERA lower than 4.00. Comparatively speaking, the RedHawks ERA would rank 11th in the International League, where eight teams have an earned run average under 4.00.
BOTTS IS BACK IN TOWN: Jason Botts was designated for assignment early last week, cleared waivers, and was outrighted to the RedHawks yesterday. Botts has played portions of three seasons in Oklahoma, including 102 games last season when he hit .320 with 13 home runs and 78 runs batted in.
SACRAMENTO AT A GLANCE: The River Cats had a two-game winning streak snapped with Tuesday's loss... Jeff Baisley extended his hitting streak to four games with a single in the first inning Tuesday... The River Cats are still looking for their 500th regular season victory. Sacramento entered the year with 482 wins since moving from Vancouver in 2000.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Texas beat Seattle 2-0... Frisco fell at Corpus Christi 2-1... Bakersfield upended Modesto 10-6... Clinton's game at South Bend was postponed due to rain.
DOT-DOT-DOT: Nelson Cruz was named as the Rangers Minor League Hitter of the Month for April, sharing the award with Clinton's Ian Gac... Kevin Richardson's home run Tuesday night was his third of the season, but first at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark... Kevin Mench extended his hitting streak to five games with a sixth inning single in Tuesday's 5-3 win.
ON THE AIR: Every game this season can be heard on the RedHawks Radio Network, led by broadcaster Jim Byers for the ninth season, and joined by Adam Marco during each homestand. Fox Sports Radio AM 1340 in Oklahoma City will serve as the flagship station in 2008. The network affiliates this season are KSIW 1450 AM in Woodward, KXCA 1380 AM in Lawton, KPNS 1350 AM in Duncan, KTJS 1420 AM in Hobart, KGFF 1450 AM in Shawnee, and KWSH 1260 AM in Wewoka. Each game will also be broadcast on the internet through the audio link at www.oklahomaredhawks.com.
