Padres Purchase Contract Of Shawn Estes

PORTLAND, Ore. - The San Diego Padres today purchased the contract of Portland left-handed pitcher Shawn Estes and placed right-handed pitcher Kevin Cameron on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to May 7) with a first-degree right elbow sprain. Additionally, the Beavers announced that right-handed pitcher Edwin Moreno has been transferred to Portland from Class AA San Antonio.

Estes, 35, was 4-2 with a 3.67 ERA (14er, 34.1ip) and 25 strikeouts in six starts with the Beavers this season. The veteran left-hander is 4-3 with a 4.75 ERA (22er, 41.2ip) over 10 appearances (8 starts) in two seasons with Portland (2007-08) and has a 99-90 record, a 4.71 ERA and 1,191 strikeouts in 274 games (273 starts) in 12 major league seasons with San Francisco (1995-2001), New York Mets (2002), Cincinnati (2002), Chicago Cubs (2003), Colorado (2004), Arizona (2005) and San Diego (2006).

Moreno, 27, was 0-2 with a 2.95 (7er, 21.1ip), 19 strikeouts and eight saves in 15 relief appearances with the Missions to start the season. The right-hander is a veteran of 10 professional seasons and split the 2007 campaign between Minatitlan of the Mexican League and San Antonio. Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 13, 1998, Moreno, a native of El Mojan, Venezuela, joined the Padres organization as a minor league free agent on July 1, 2007.

The Beavers roster remains at its 24-man limit.
