Portland Beavers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Chase Headley had five hits and Brian Myrow delivered a clutch double that plated the tying and go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth as the Portland Beavers rallied for an 8-7 victory over the Omaha Royals Thursday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.
Headley, who also drew a walk to reach base in each of his six plate appearances, became just the 10th Portland batter in eight seasons to log five hits in a game. His ninth-inning single advanced Matt Antonelli to second, and both scored on Myrow's game-breaking, one-out double off closer Neal Musser (0-1).
The win lifted the Beavers (17-15) to their 10th win in their last 12 games and improved their all-time record at Rosenblatt Stadium to 15-4.
Edgar Gonzalez belted his third home run of the season and Chip Ambres had a two-run double for the Beavers, who stranded a record 17 base runners for the second time in their last four games.
Jared Wells worked an uneventful bottom of the ninth to notch his sixth save of the year and his 15th in three seasons with the Beavers. Mike Adams (3-1) worked one scoreless inning for his third win of the season.
The Beavers, who are now in sole possession of second place in their division, went up 3-0 early and later held a 5-3 lead but couldn't hold back the Royals (16-16).
Omaha knotted things in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Smith tripled and scored on an RBI single by Angel Berroa. The Royals then loaded the bases and tied it when Berroa scored on Mitch Maier's sacrifice fly to deep center.
One inning later, Shane Costa hit a leadoff homer off Paul Abraham and Berroa, who was 3-for-4 with a double, singled home former Beaver David Matranga to give the Royals a 7-6 lead.
Meanwhile, Headley, regarded as the top prospect in the San Diego Padres system, is batting .304 on the season, going 19-for-39 (.487) over his last nine games to raise his average from .221.
Headley's RBI double scored Nick Hundley in the seventh for a short-lived 6-5 Portland advantage.
The Beavers got a serviceable effort from Josh Banks, who joined the rotation in place of Shawn Estes, who had his contract purchased by San Diego earlier in the day. Banks, who left the game under his own power after a hard-hit ball off the bat of former Beaver Brian Buchanan deflected off his glove and hit him in the face, gave the Beavers 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs and 10 hits while striking out five.
Gonzalez singled, Will Venable walked and Ambres got Portland on the board with his two-run double in the second inning. Two batters later, Hundley doubled to left to score Ambres, but with a chance at extending their lead, Portland left the bases loaded in the inning.
Gonzalez hit a solo homer to start the third, taking starter Brandon Duckworth deep to the bleachers in left field. Duckworth lasted just two-plus innings, allowing four runs, five hits and four walks before giving way to the bullpen after the first three Portland batters reached in the top of the third.
Omaha bounced back in the bottom of the third and cut the Beavers' lead to a run. Mike Aviles stroked a two-run double into center field and later came around to score on a two-out single from Matt Tupman to close the gap.
Portland scratched out a run in the top of the sixth when Headley reached on a one-out single, took second when Myrow drew a walk against reliever Brad Salmon and scored on Venable's two-out single to right.
The Beavers and Royals conclude their series Friday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).
