OKLAHOMA CITY, Feb. 25, 2015 - The Oklahoma City Blue fell to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 124-117, on Wednesday despite a career-high 35 points from Semaj Christon. The Blue guard added seven assists, three rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes.
Five Oklahoma City players scored in double figures including Marquis Teague with 26 points, two boards and two assists. Xavier Alexander recorded 10 points and 13 rebounds while Talib Zanna scored 15 points with six rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Maurice Sutton added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Vipers led by as many as 15 points in the first half, outscoring the Blue 67-60 through the first two quarters. Oklahoma City opened the second half with an 11-4 run to go ahead 73-71. Christon scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting as the Blue outscored RGV 29-27 in the frame.
Rio Grande Valley used a 9-2 run in the middle of the fourth to take a 112-104 lead, but the Blue hung with them, cutting RGV's lead to three on a put-back layup from Alexander with 1:21 remaining. The Vipers shot 5-of-6 from the foul line in the final minute to hold off Oklahoma City.
"I thought we competed really hard in the second half," said Blue Head Coach Mark Daigneault. "I was pleased with our level of energy and effort in that half of basketball. I was disappointed in the way we started the game. I thought we would have started a lot faster but didn't get off to the start that we wanted. We have to focus on that coming up in this next stretch of practice and try to get better moving forward."
Oklahoma City (20-16) committed a season-low 10 turnovers while stealing the ball 14 times from RGV.
Rio Grande Valley (19-15) was led by Tony Bishop with 28 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue hits the road for a pair of games out west, facing the Reno Bighorns on Saturday at 9 p.m. and the Santa Cruz Warriors on Sunday at 8 p.m. For more information, visit OklahomaCityBlue.com.
