PORTLAND, Maine - February 25, 2015 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, have partnered up with Unitil to bring the NBA "Read To Achieve" program back to Portland area schools.
Red Claws players Asauhn Dixon-Tatum and Sherwood Brown helped launch the program earlier this month at Longley Elementary in Lewiston. This week, Dixon-Tatum and Romero Osby stopped by Frank Brown and Dora Small Schools in South Portland.
Promoting a lifelong love of reading, "Read To Achieve" is a program that has become a staple of community service throughout the NBA. A player or member of the Red Claws organization visits area elementary schools to read aloud to students and talk about the importance of reading and learning.
"We are thrilled that one of our great corporate sponsors, Unitil, has come on board to bring "ËRead To Achieve' back to Maine," said Red Claws president Dajuan Eubanks. "This is a great way for the Red Claws and Unitil to reach our youngest fans and promote the importance of reading."
Supporting education is an important part of Unitil's effort to build strong, successful communities," said Alec O'Meara, media relations manager for Unitil. "We're excited to join the Red Claws as they bring the "ËRead to Achieve' program to students across Maine. We've already seen firsthand how the Red Claws players are motivating and inspiring children to love reading."
A proud part of communities all around Northern New England, Unitil provides energy for life by safely and reliably delivering natural gas to customers in Maine. Portland is in the middle of the Unitil SURE project, a 14-year initiative to modernize the Portland area's gas infrastructure, making it more reliable and better able to meet the growing demand for natural gas in Maine.
"Read To Achieve" is scheduled to make a stop at Congin School in Westbrook this Friday, as well as a handful of Portland schools over the coming weeks.
