Oilers Join Forces with Childers Middle School for Holiday Food Drive
November 19, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK - With a little inspiration from the Tulsa Oilers, the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Childers Middle School in Broken Arrow have already made this a memorable holiday season for many needy families.
For the second year in a row, the annual Childers holiday food drive has a "hockey" theme and the two classrooms with the most food donations are being rewarded today with a floor hockey game against the Oilers. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. today at the Childers gymnasium.
Three weeks ago, six Oilers players visited Childers to encourage the students to give and let them know about the chance to play floor hockey in front of the entire school. The Childers students responded by bringing in more than 4,300 canned food items and 92 frozen turkeys which will be given to Broken Arrow Neighbors to distribute throughout the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
"Bringing the Oilers on board has really helped to make our food drive more successful," said Childers Assistant Principal Chris England. "The kids are so fired up about the chance to play floor hockey against real hockey players and I know it has motivated them to bring in more donations. I know we have students who have been looking forward to this all year and I'm glad our kids can have fun and learn about the value of generosity at the same time."
The Oilers players (Ben Gordon, Ryan Menei, Drew Akins, Drew Fisher, Ryan Cramer, and Gary Steffes) will be wearing game jerseys and will be split between the two winning classrooms. Students will participate along with several faculty members who have been voted into the game by their students.
