November 19, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
QUACK TRACKS
Tight Times
The Mallards won two of three tight, hard fought games over the weekend. Last Friday's 3-1 win was the Mallards' first ever victory in Wichita. The Mallards rebounded from a 3-2 loss in Bloomington last Saturday night with a 3-2 shootout win over Rapid City yesterday.
On the Road
Last Saturday's defeat in Bloomington was the Mallards' first regulation road loss of the season. Quad City has gone 2-1-1 away from home and boasts the second best road winning percentage in the CHL. The Mallards are in the midst of a stretch during which they will play seven of nine games on the road.
The Mick
Mickey Lang (7-7-14) is riding an eight game point scoring streak (5-6-11), the second longest such streak currently alive in the CHL. Lang has recorded at least one point in all but one of the Mallards' first 11 games. He leads the team in points and is tied with Obi Aduba for the team lead in goals.
Give 'Em Hell-yer
Mike Hellyer (2-7-9) produced five points (2-3-5) in three games last weekend. Hellyer notched two points in each of the Mallards' last two games after scoring his first goal for the club late in last Friday's win in Wichita. Hellyer is also tied for the team lead in plus/minus (+6).
Between the Pipes
John Murray (3-1-2, 2.56, .925) last weekend made 54 saves in regulation and overtime while giving up just three goals and turned away all three shootout chances he faced while earning back-to-back wins. Murray, who is unbeaten in regulation (3-0-2) since losing his Mallard debut on October 27 against Tulsa, ranks third in the league in save percentage and fifth in goals against average. Jimmy Spratt made 27 saves while taking the loss in his Mallard debut last Saturday in Bloomington.
Firsts
Like Hellyer, Brett Robinson (2-0-2), who signed with the Mallards on November 5, scored his first Quad City goal last Friday in Wichita. Robinson, in fact, scored a pair of goals- including the game winner- in the victory over the Thunder. Bob Preece (1-0-1) yesterday scored his first goal since rejoining the Mallards last Monday.
Saturday Night Fever
The Mallards are 0-4-0 in Saturday games this season but have gone unbeaten in regulation- 5-0-2- in games played on any other day of the week.
Wichita Win
Prior to winning in Wichita last Friday, the Mallards had lost each of the four road games they had played against the Thunder since entering the Central Hockey League in 2010. Last Friday's victory was also the Mallards' first ever regulation win over the Thunder. Each of the Mallards' prior three defeats of Wichita had come in either overtime or the shootout.
Workin' Overtime
Yesterday marked the fifth time in just 11 games this season the Mallards have gone to overtime and Quad City's fourth trip to the shootout. The Mallards have gone 2-2 in shootouts.
Shooting Gallery
While the Mallards do allow 34.7 shots per game- the second highest average in the league- Quad City has outshot the opposition in three of its last four games.
Power Play
The Mallards remain last in the CHL on the power play (9.5 percent). Quad City has gone 4-for-42 on the season and has converted just two of 29 power plays over its last seven games.
Sin Bin
The Mallards rank second in the league in penalty minutes per game (19.4) after collecting either the fewest or second fewest penalty minutes in the CHL (2010-11 and 2011-12) or IHL (2009-10) each of the last three seasons.
Busy
Beginning Friday the Mallards will embark upon their second stretch of three games in three nights in as many weekends and their fourth three-in-three in the first five weekends of the season. The Mallards last weekend began a run of seven games in ten nights, a stretch that concludes when Quad City visits Bloomington Sunday. That meeting with the Blaze was added to the Mallards' schedule after the start of the Flock's season was delayed and the Tulsa Oilers took Quad City's place in an October 19 game in Wichita that was originally scheduled as the Mallards' opener.
Thanksgiving
The Mallards on Thursday night in Fort Worth will play their first Thanksgiving game since Frank Anzalone's Flock fell to the Komets in Fort Wayne on November 25, 2010.
Head-to-Head
Thursday night's game is the first meeting ever between the Mallards and Brahmas...The Mallards have won their first two match-ups of the season with the Thunder...The Mallards and Oilers split a home-and-home series on the opening weekend of the season with the road team taking each contest...Sunday's battle in Bloomington is the fifth of nineteen between the Mallards and Blaze this season. Quad City has gone 1-2-1 against Bloomington so far this year.
Ins and Outs
The Mallards today signed forward Matt Boyd, waived defenseman Jared Lavender and placed forward Cory McGillis on 14-day injured reserve (concussion)...Jason Kostadine (lower body) remains on 14-day I.R.
