Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
EDMONTON, AB - The offense has seemingly dried up at Rogers Place as of late for the Edmonton Oil Kings as the club was shutout for the second straight home game Tuesday night at the hands of the Vancouver Giants.
Edmonton fired 28 shots on net at Giants goalie Ryan Kubic but came up with nothing but a strong defensive effort in the 2-0 loss.
"I thought the shots that we did get were pretty perimeter," said head coach Steve Hamilton. "We didn't fight enough to get the inside position around the loose pucks. In all honesty, that game was the first time all-year I thought our group didn't bring the energy and enthusiasm and pace that we've come to expect. We have to be an honest club if nothing else."
The Oil Kings came flying out of the gates to start the game firing 13 shots on Giants netminder Ryan Kubic but were unable to solve him. Artyom Baltruk had a beautiful chance but Kubic robbed him with the left pad. He then got a little luck from the post as well when Lane Bauer ripped a shot off the crossbar and out. Edmonton held Vancouver to just two shots in the first 20 minutes.
There was not a goal until half way through the third. There was, however, a fight as Kobe Mohr and Brendan Semchuk dropped the gloves entertaining the crowd of 5,000. The first goal came off of a Will Warm turnover when Alec Baer intercepted a pass and set up Radovan Bondra in the slot, who roofed it over Liam Hughes.
Edmonton just couldn't muster up many chances in the latter stages of the third with the exception of a nice rush and dangle by Anatolii Elizarov as they were mostly stymied by the Giants. They finished the game 0/3 on the powerplay and 2/3 on the penalty kill.
"Tonight we cut some corners," said Hamilton. "Credit to Vancouver. They're coming off a four-in-five and they hung around long enough to find one more goal than we did. It was not the effort I would have expected having had a couple days between games."
The Oil Kings will look for that effort continuing its seven-game homestand entertaining another BC team: the Victoria Royals Friday October 14 at 7pm.
