Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Regina, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings used six different goal scorers on Wednesday night as they kicked off their three-game road trip with an emphatic 6-1 win over the Regina Pats at the Brandt Centre.
The Oil Kings played a near perfect road period in the opening 20 minutes in Regina as they raced out to a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
Ty Nash notched his first goal as an Oil King exactly six minutes into the game with a shorthanded marker as he outmuscled Parker Berge for a loose puck in the Regina zone and then elevated the puck up over the left arm of Regina netminder Ewan Huet for the game's icebreaker.
Just 3:39 later, the Oil Kings increased their lead after John Szabo, who returned to the Edmonton lineup after missing the last seven games with injury, collected his third goal of the season after he was setup in the slot by Ethan MacKenzie where he would rip a shot low blocker and past Huet.
The Pats had a couple of looks at the Edmonton net in the period, but Oil Kings netminder Kolby Hay was rock-solid turning away all 11 Regina shots.
As good as the first period was for the Oil Kings, the second was even better as they would outscore the home side 4-1 to take a 6-1 lead into the second intermission.
On a delayed penalty less than six minutes into the period, Skyler Bruce gave Edmonton a 3-0 lead with his seventh goal of the season after smacking a loose puck in the Regina crease into a wide-open net.
Just 2:19 later, Cole Miller made it 4-0 with his second goal of the season after dancing around Berge in the neutral-zone and scorching a shot over the left shoulder of Huet and into the top corner from the right-wing circle.
Just across the midway mark of the period, Smyth Rebman collected his first career WHL goal as he muscled a backhander through Huet after he was setup in front of the Regina net by Mason Finley on a partial odd-man rush. That goal would spell the end of the night for Huet as he was replaced in the Regina cage by Kelton Pyne after giving up five goals on 23 Edmonton shots.
Late in the period, the Pats did get on the board as Tanner Howe was able to cleanup a rebound in front of the Edmonton net to break the goose egg, but that goal was quickly answered by an Edmonton power play marker off the stick of Marc Lajoie as he let fly a one-time blast into the top shelf from the right-circle after a sweet no-look setup by Gavin Hodnett.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would lock things down and cruise to the 6-1 victory.
Hay finished the night making 28 saves for his fifth win of the season for the Oil Kings, while Huet and Pyne combined for 30 saves for the Pats. Edmonton went 1-for-3 on the power play, Regina was 0-for-4.
