Wheat Kings this Week: Girl Power Night, Showdown with League's Best for Final November Home Games

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Wheat Kings fans will have just two more chances to see their team at Westoba Place in the month of November. The team is planning to give the fans quite a sendoff with their final two home games of the month.

First up is Girl Power Night on Friday, November 17 as the Wheat Kings face the Edmonton Oil Kings for the first time all season. We're celebrating women and girls in sport, and highlighting the Subway Female Hockey Challenge in town, with teams from U11 to U18 age groups.

The Wheat Kings are fresh off a weekend split against the Regina Pats in which they won the first game, coming back in dramatic fashion and holding on the third period, but dropped the second after surrendering a lead of their own.

"We have to be at our best," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "It's more about us, these are two teams we haven't really seen. So we have to get back to good habits. We'll break down the opponents but it's about getting back to good habits. We're doing some good things here at home lately so hopefully we can keep that going."

Following a trade with the Regina Pats, there's a new face at practice this week for the Wheat Kings as Matteo Michels joins the group. He scored two goals and added an assist against the Wheat Kings in four games with the Pats, so the Wheat Kings know full well what he can bring to the table.

"Speed kills, and Matteo, that's kind of the bread and butter to his game," Murray said. "He gets up and down the ice really well. He was impressive, I thought, in the games against us and he's coming into his own as a Western Hockey Leaguer."

More reinforcements for the forward corps are coming in the form of Joby Baumuller, who returns to the team fresh off a gold medal at the World Under-17 Challenge. His return means the Wheat Kings will have some tough choices to make on a nightly basis.

"It'll be a battle," said Murray. "We've got 14 healthy forwards right now. We have a week of practice here, we'll get a good look at everybody throughout the week and put our best foot forward here starting on Friday."

After hosting the Oil Kings on Friday, the Wheat Kings welcome the WHL-leading Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday. The Tigers are armed to the teeth with offensive talent, and have recently played their way into the CHL top-ten. Led by 2024 NHL draft prospect Cayden Lindstrom and 2022 WHL first overall pick Gavin McKenna, the Tigers pose a tough test.
