Oil Kings Fall in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped their penultimate road game of the 2022-23 season to the Medicine Hat Tigers on Wednesday night.

In the first period, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after outshooting the Oil Kings 10-4 in the opening frame.

Gavin McKenna got the icebreaker 13:38 into the period after throwing home a centering pass from Tyler MacKenzie.

Brendan Lee made it a 2-0 lead just 2:29 later with his 30th goal of the season after taking advantage of a turned over puck inside the Edmonton blueline.

Andrew Basha built the Tiger lead to three just 4:32 into the middle stanza after he was able to tip in a point-shot from Josh Van Mulligen.

The Tigers would eventually make it a 5-0 lead getting goals just over a minute apart from Hunter St. Martin and Oasiz Wiesblatt just before the halfway point of the period.

Logan Cunningham would replace Kolby Hay in the Edmonton crease following the fifth Medicine Hat goal and it provided a spark for the Oil Kings as they would score twice in under two minutes to make it a 5-2 deficit heading into the second intermission.

Mason Finley got Edmonton on the board with his 14th of the season, and third in his last two games, after firing a shot top-corner from the right-circle off a setup from Gavin Hodnett and Cole Miller.

Miller would then get Edmonton's second goal as this time Finley played the setup man finding Miller open in the right-circle where he would blast a one-timer past Tiger 'tender Beckett Langkow for his 10th goal of the season.

In the third period, the Tigers would pull away with three goals in the opening 7:30, two of which supplied by Lee as he recorded his first career WHL hat-trick, to make the final 8-2 in the Tigers favour.

Hay and Cunningham combined for 32 saves in the Edmonton crease, while Langkow made 13 for Medicine Hat. The Oil Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play, the Tigers were 0-for-1.

Next up, the Oil Kings return home for their final home game of the 2022-23 season when they play host to the Calgary Hitmen at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, March 25.
