Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Prince Albert, SK - Cam Lanigan stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced and Dylan Wruck scored two of the team's three goals as the Edmonton Oil Kings defeated the Prince Albert Raiders on Wednesday night for their first win of the season.
Both the Oil Kings and Raiders were 0-2 heading into Wednesday's Western Hockey League action at the Art Hauser Centre in Prince Albert, but Edmonton was able to snap its losing streak with some timely scoring and solid goaltending.
Twenty-year-old forward Jordan Hickmott, who played for the Raiders last season, made it 1-0 Oil Kings 7:55 into the first period, with assists going to rookie defenceman Griffin Reinhart and newly appointed team captain Mark Pysyk, as the blue-liner and Buffalo Sabres 2010 first-rounder was making his debut with the 'C' on his jersey.
The Oil Kings added to their lead with less than three minutes to go in the opening frame, as Wruck scored his first goal from Travis Ewanyk. The sniper from nearby Saskatoon struck again in the middle frame to make it 3-0, this time on the power play, with assists going to T.J. Foster and Keegan Lowe, who fought with Prince Albert's Austin Bouris earlier in the game.
The Raiders spoiled Lanigan's shutout with a power-play goal of their own with six and a half minutes left in the game, as Brandon Herrod scored from Mark McNeill and Todd Fiddler. Lanigan was otherwise flawless on the night, as the Calgary native made 36 saves to earn the win.
The Oil Kings will go for back-to-back wins on Friday as they take on the Regina Pats in Regina at 7 p.m. Their next home game is Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Moose Jaw Warriors at Rexall Place. The first 5,000 fans will receive an Oil Kings magnetic schedule, and it's also an Autograph Sunday where there will be a full-team autograph session after the game.
