Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings erased a 4-1 deficit to comeback and stun the Brandon Wheat Kings with a 5-4 overtime win on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place.
A sluggish first period for the Oil Kings saw them get outshot 15-5 and outscored 2-0 by the visiting Wheat Kings.
Matteo Michels opened the scoring for the visitors at the 12:13 mark of the period after elevating a shot short-side and top shelf from in tight to the Edmonton net after taking a nifty pass from Nolan Flamand.
The Wheat Kings added to their lead with a power play goal courtesy Roger McQueen at the 15:14 mark as he bolted into the Edmonton zone, drove to the net and swept a shot past the extended left leg of Kolby Hay.
A goal filled second period left the Oil Kings within one heading to the third period.
Less than two minutes into the period, Adam Jecho got Edmonton on the board after taking a pass from Gracyn Sawchyn in the right-circle and snapping a shot past the blocker of Brandon netminder Ethan Eskit.
The Wheaties were quick to answer getting a pair of power play goals from Jayden Wiens over the next 10 minutes to pull ahead 4-1.
Late in the period though, the Oil Kings would find their game getting goals from Marshall Finnie and Eastyn Mannix in the final 3:41 of the frame.
Finnie's goal came on a power play after Roan Woodward found him open in front of the Brandon net where he was able to elevate a shot over the shoulder of Eskit.
Mannix tallied his first career WHL goal with just 21 seconds left in the period after taking a rink wide feed from Gavin Hodnett and blasting a slapshot over the left leg of Eskit from the right circle to bring Edmonton to just a 4-3 deficit at the intermission.
In the third period, the Oil Kings would press all period long for an equalizer and with 3:09 left in regulation they would get it after Finnie fired home his second of the night from the slot on a setup from Gavin Hodnett to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Roan Woodward would complete the comeback after winding his way into the left circle of the Wheat Kings zone and lasering a shot short-side over the right leg of Eskit for his first career overtime goal.
