Welcome Back!
After two weeks away, the Winterhawks are FINALLY back on home ice - even if it's still a bit earlier than planned! Tonight's game is the rescheduled matchup from Jan. 13, which was postponed due to the winter storm in the Portland area that weekend.
A busy slate hasn't slowed the Hawks down this weekend as they knocked off Tri-City and Spokane in tightly contested road battles. The Hawks have now won three consecutive games, as well as 15 of their last 18 contests (15-2-1-0 in that span) as they welcome another division rival to the VMC this evening. A win would mark their second three-in-three sweep of the season and the first with multiple road victories.
Seattle enters tonight's contest coming off last night's rousing win over then-division-leading Everett, who is tied with Portland on 63 points, though the Silvertips have played four more games. The T-Birds have added reinforcements since the Winterhawks last saw them, welcoming Anaheim Ducks prospect Nico Myatovic and Vegas Golden Knights prospect and team captain Jordan Gustafson back to their lineup. Quite the shot in the arm for a young T-Birds group that has tumbled down the standings, and picking up four wins out of their last six games following a nine-game winless skid will have them flying high heading into another classic rivalry clash.
Diego's 100th
It's hard to believe it's already here, but Diego Buttazzoni is expected to hit triple digits in WHL games played tonight! Currently in his second season with the Winterhawks, the 18-year-old NHL Draft prospect boasts 49 points (26G, 23A) through 99 career games and is currently enjoying a breakout campaign. After posting 15 points in 56 games last season, Buttazzoni ranks fourth on the Winterhawks with 20 goals, and sixth with 34 points in just 43 games this year.
Buttazzoni was drafted in the second round, #37 overall, of the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft by Medicine Hat. He was acquired by Portland via trade ahead of the 2022-23 campaign, and skated full-time with the Winterhawks as a 16-year-old rookie last season. Congrats on hitting the century mark, Diego!
Around The Roster
In addition to Buttazzoni's milestone moment, there are a couple of other items to keep an eye on tonight.
Luca Cagnoni continues to make history, cracking the top 10 in career assists AND points among all-time Winterhawks defensemen this weekend. Now, he's eyeing a top 10 spot in goals by a defenseman, sitting just one shy of Clay Hanus' 37 career tallies. When he hits that mark, he'll be just the sixth Winterhawk currently ranking 10th or higher in all three categories.
Back in the forward corps, Nate Danielson is set for his home debut after skating in his first games with Portland on the road. Acquired via trade on Jan. 10, the Detroit Red Wings first-rounder has posted seven points in five contests with the Hawks thus far while logging key minutes in all situations. What will #89 have in store for his first outing in front of the Portland faithful? We can't wait to find out!
