Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - Tyson Jugnauth led the way with his second three-point performance of the year as the Winterhawks cruised past the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-1 to complete a three-game weekend sweep.
The Winterhawks have won four consecutive contests and their record now stands at 31-11-2-1 on the year.
Josh Zakreski opened the scoring midway through the first period as he managed to hammer a Jugnauth rebound through Spencer Michnik for a 1-0 lead. Braeden Cootes responded for Seattle on a power play three minutes later, but Jugnauth's second goal as a Winterhawk restored the hosts' lead. The Seattle Kraken prospect leaped to intercept a Sawyer Mynio clearing attempt off the glass, then wove through T-Birds defenders before wiring a wrister from the left circle at 18:38.
A scoreless second period set the stage for a tense third, but the Winterhawks quickly put the game to bed with two goals in the first four minutes of the frame. Hudson Darby tipped home a remarkable seeing-eye pass from Jugnauth for a 3-1 lead at 3:18, followed 39 seconds later by Diego Buttazzoni finishing off a Nate Danielson setup for his 21st of the season in his 100th WHL game.
Portland goaltender Luke Brunen started for the first time since sustaining an injury on Dec. 1, 2023, and made 23 saves on 24 shots to earn the win. Spencer Michnik was a busy man for Seattle with 39 saves on 43 shots in his team's loss.
The Winterhawks are back in action this Wednesday as they host the Kelowna Rockets at 7:00 P.M. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
