Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings (47-14-3-1) snapped their three-game losing streak with a wild 6-4 win over the visiting Red Deer Rebels (44-18-2-2) on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Place in the team's inaugural Pride Day game.

The Oil Kings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period thanks to a pair of goals from Justin Sourdif, but the Rebels were able to counter with two late goals in the opening 20 minutes to send the teams to the intermission tied at two.

Sourdif's first of the afternoon came 8:50 into the game as he pounced on a loose puck in front of the Red Deer net and slid it past a prone Connor Ungar in the Rebels crease for his 24th of the season and his 200th career WHL point.

Less than six minutes later he struck again as he weaved is way into the right-circle and elevated a shot over the left arm of Ungar.

The Rebels cut the deficit to one with just under three minutes left in the period as on a power play, Christoffer Sedoff was able to settle a pinballing puck in the left-circle and snap a shot into an open Edmonton cage.

Less than two minutes later, they evened the score and this time it would be Sedoff setting up the goal as he snapped a shot-pass towards the Edmonton net that Jace Isley would make a crafty redirect on to tie the game at two.

Early in the second period, the Oil Kings retook the lead as Tyler Horstmann galloped onto a loose puck in front of the Red Deer net, made a quick move to his left and slid the puck across the goal line for his third goal of the season.

Red Deer forward Frantisek Formanek was issued a five-minute major for kneeing at the 7:09 mark of the period and the Oil Kings made the Rebels pay as they scored twice on the extended man-advantage.

First, Dylan Guenther potted his first of two in the period as he snuck a wrist shot through the wickets of Ungar from the left-circle. Less than a minute later, Carter Souch made it a 5-2 Edmonton lead as he settled the puck off a bounce from the end boards and quickly snapped a shot into the back of the net for his 21st of the campaign.

The Rebels were able to briefly pull back to within two as Ben King cashed in his league-leading 50th goal of the season on a Red Deer power play with 2:28 left in the middle stanza but in the final minute, Guenther tipped home his second of the afternoon, 44th of the season, as he was setup by Sourdif at the top of the Red Deer crease.

Early in the third period, Arshdeep Bains would again bring the Rebels to within two but that would be as close as they would come as the Oil Kings and goaltender Kolby Hay would slam the door the rest of the way.

Hay made 27 saves for his 15th win of the season, while Ungar turned away 47 in the losing cause. Both teams finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play.
