Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a 5-2 decision to the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night at Westoba Place.
The Oil Kings controlled much of the first period outshooting the Wheat Kings 10-7 but a late goal from the home side would put Edmonton down 1-0 after one period.
Just as an Oil Kings power play expired, the Wheat Kings broke into the Edmonton zone on a three-on-one rush that was finished off by Brett Hyland with only 2.5 ticks left on the clock in the period.
In the second period, the Wheat Kings took over the game scoring four times to take a comfortable 5-0 lead into the second intermission.
Nate Danielson and Jayden Wiens scored goals just 1:18 apart in the early stages to put the Oil Kings back on their heels before Dominik Petr and Luke Shipley would both etch their names on the scoresheet in the final five minutes of the period.
In the third period, the Oil Kings were able to trim deficit to three goals after Nathan Pilling collected his fourth of the season with a beautiful top-shelf backhand shot from along the Brandon goal line followed a 1:28 later by Gavin Hodnett's first goal of the season after he roofed a puck from the slot on a steup from Cole Miller, but that's as close as the Oil Kings would get.
Kolby Hay finished the night making 30 saves for the Oil Kings, while Bjarnason turned in 28 for the Wheat Kings. Edmonton went 0-for-3 on the power play, Brandon was 1-for-5.
Next up, the Oil Kings wrap up their three-game road trip tomorrow night in Moose Jaw against the Warriors at 6:00 P.M. MT. You can listen to all the action on the Oil Kings Radio Network, iHeartRadio Canada.
