Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Back on home ice, the Brandon Wheat Kings took some time about getting their offense rolling, but once it got out of the starting blocks it carried them to another home win.
Brett Hyland, Nate Danielson, Jayden Wiens, Dominik Petr, and Luke Shipley scored and the Wheat Kings took a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings. Nathan Pilling and Gavin Hodnett replied for Edmonton.
"We played the way we want to play in the second period," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "We were able to generate a lot of offense and capitalize on some plays there. It was a big second period, and it was the difference in the game.
As the first period wound down, Caleb Hadland found himself sprung on an odd-man rush out of the penalty box. He fed Petr in the slot, and Petr fed it back to Hyland, who joined the rush and outwaited Hay, lifting it over him as he sprawled out. It was Hyland's 100th point as a Wheat King, and it came with just 2.5 seconds left in the period.
Though the Oil Kings pressed early in the second, the Wheat Kings struck first. Off the rush, Danielson broke in off the right wing and fired an almost casual snapshot straight to the top corner to make it 2-0.
That opened the floodgates for the Wheat Kings, who kept picking corners. First it was Wiens, taking a feed as he jumped into the play off the bench and snapping one home to the blocker side.
Next, Hyland won a battle in front of the net and fed the puck back to Petr, who placed his wrister perfectly, ripping it right under the bar to spread the lead to four. On the power play, a heavy shot by Shipley found its way through to extend the lead to 5-0.
Early in the third, the Oil Kings spoiled Bjarnason's shutout bid when Pilling fired a clever backhand past his ear off the rush. Then, Hodnett potted his first of the season with a snapshot from the left circle.
That was as close as the Oil Kings got, however, as the Wheat Kings held on for 5-2 win. They're back in action on Saturday against the Medicine Hat Tigers at 7:00.
