Oil Kings Bested by Cougars in OT

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a back-and-forth affair to the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night at Rogers Place by a 4-3 final in overtime.

The Oil Kings had the only goal of the opening 20 minutes after former Cougar Noah Boyko opened the scoring 11:36 into the game by stealing the puck in the neutral zone, weaving into the right-circle of the Prince George zone and lasering a shot over the right-shoulder of Ty Young.

The Cougars fired 13 shots the way of the Edmonton net in the first period, but Kolby Hay was able to bar the door with several big saves.

In the second period, the Cougars peppered 17 more shots the way of the Edmonton net and with 5:56 left in the middle stanza, they were finally able to breakthrough on a power play goal from Koehn Ziemmer.

Undeterred by the visitors pushing back, the Oil Kings restored their lead just 1:44 later after Loick Daigle dug a puck free behind the Prince George net and slipped it in front to a wide-open Cole Miller who one-timed home his seventh of the season to maintain the one-goal lead for Edmonton through 40 minutes.

In the third period, the Cougars struck twice in the opening eight minutes to pull ahead by a 3-2 score after a sensational goal from Zac Funk, setup by Ziemmer, followed up by Ziemmer's second of the contest and third point.

The Oil Kings would not go quietly as with under five mintues left in regulation time, Daigle played setup man for a second time as he found Marshall Finnie with a centering pass that he slammed into the back of the net for his sixth of the season to tie the game at three and send it to overtime.

In overtime, former Oil King Jaxsen Wiebe setup the winning goal after he feathered the puck to a wide-open Chase Wheatcroft in the slot that he shelved to put the game to away for the visitors.

Hay finished the night with 40 saves for the Oil Kings, while Young turned in 30 for the Cougars. Edmonton went 1-for-5 on the power play, Prince George was 1-for-3.

Next up, the Oil Kings play host to the Brandon Wheat Kings tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
