Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat , AB - Thanks to a four goal second period, the Medicine Hat Tigers scored their third straight win of the week with a 7-1 triumph over the Calgary Hitmen Saturday night at Co-op Place.
A tight defensive first period from both clubs saw no scoring between the Hitmen and Tigers, Beckett Langkow (Vegreville, AB) was busy in the Tigers net making 12 saves on 12 shots from Calgary, including some work on the penalty kill for the Tigers but were able to hold the Hitmen at bay killing it off and went into the 1st intermission scoreless.
2nd Period Highlights
Both teams have glorious chances early on in the first five minutes but Langkow and Hitmen goaltender Ethan Buenaventura were able to keep things tight before the Tigers would finally break the seal as Pasha Bocharov (Escondido, CA) would notch his 9th of the year from Oasiz Wiesblatt (Calgary, AB) at 9:41, and the hits kept on coming for the home side just 59 seconds later as Shane Smith (Cessford, AB) would bang home his 15th of the season from a Brett Calhoon (Oliver, BC) shot, and veteran Dallon Melin (Czar, AB) would score his 9th point in eight games in the month of January to make it 2-0 Tigers. The Smith goal puck was picked up for Calhoon's first WHL point.
The Hitmen would come back shortly after at 13:37 as Oilver Tulk would win a battle in front of the Tiger net chipping the puck over Langkow to cut the Tiger lead to 2-1. But the Tigers would get right back after the Hitmen 2:06 later as Smith shelfs his second of the night and 16th of the season from Tigers captain Owen MacNeil (Calgary, AB) and Bogdans Hodass (Jelgava, LAT). But the Tigers would close out the middle stanza 17 seconds later at 16:10 as Hunter St. Martin (Edmonton, AB) would take off on a Hitmen turnover at the blue line and beat Buenaventure on the far side blocker to make 4-1 Medicine Hat for his 4th of the season. Tigers would take a three goal lead going to the third period.
Off to the third period where it would be the Tigers killing off another penalty to start before adding to their goal totals as Cayden Lindstrom (Chetwynd, BC) would cash in on the power play as the Tigers would solve the top penalty kill in the WHL at 13:07 from as Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB) & Melin would draw assists to make it 5-1 Medicine Hat, the Tigers would finally ice things for good in the final minute from a pair of goals from the shutdown defence pairing of Kurtis Smythe (Cloverdale, BC) at 19:17 and then exactly 30 seconds later at 19:47 Josh Van Mulligen (Medicine Hat, AB) would finish things off making it 7-1 Tigers. For Smythe it's his first goal since April 15, 2022 & Van Mulligen's first tally since April 1, 2022 against the Calgary Hitmen
The Tigers would eventually outshoot the Hitmen 31-30, a 1/5 effort on the man advantage and a clean sheet on the penalty kill going 4/4.
It's a tight turn for the Tigers as their back in action Sunday afternoon as the Swift Current Broncos come to Co-op Place. It's a special 4 PM start time, get your ticket now at tixx.ca
