Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings were blanked 2-0 Sunday afternoon by the Brandon Wheat Kings at Rogers Place.
The Wheat Kings jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an unassisted power play goal from Nate Danielson just four minutes into the contest after he ripped a shot over the right-shoulder of Logan Cunningham from the left-wing circle.
At 12:33 of the opening frame, the Wheaties extended their lead to 2-0 after Danielson created a turnover behind the Edmonton net and spotted a wide-open Rylen Roersma for a backdoor tap-in.
The Oil Kings were held to just seven shots on goal in the first period, but the majority of them were dangerous chances that Brandon netminder Carson Bjarnason was able to keep out of his net.
There would be no scoring in the second period as both goalies remained dialed in with Cunningham stopping all 16 shots sent his way by the Wheat Kings and Bjarnason kicking out the eight shots he saw from the Edmonton shooters.
In the third period, the Wheat Kings locked things down in their own zone allowing just four Edmonton shots and skating to the 2-0 decision.
Cunningham finished the afternoon with 42 saves, while Bjarnason made 19 for the clean sheet. The Oil Kings went 0-for-5 on the power play, the Wheaties were 1-for-7.
Next up, the Oil Kings welcome the Calgary Hitmen to Rogers Place on Friday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m.
