Birmingham Barons News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Despite a late rally, the Birmingham Barons (9-14) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (14-8) by a 3-2 final Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Barons brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in newcomer Brett Nicholas with nobody out in the ninth. However, Nicholas, who was transferred to Double-A Birmingham from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to limit the threat.

Trey Michalczewski scored on the grounder to cut the deficit to one run, but Mitch Roman struck out looking to end the game.

The Barons have totaled just six runs throughout their current six-game losing streak, which includes a pair of shutouts.

Despite the loss, left-hander Bernardo Flores (L, 1-3) managed to battle through five innings. The southpaw surrendered just three runs on five hits and struck out five.

After Montgomery plated a run in the opening frame, Flores kept the Biscuits off the board until the fourth when Robbie Tenerowicz deposited a two-run homer to left. Tenerowicz's blast represented the eventual game-winning hit.

Barons right-hander Matt Foster and left-hander Matt Tomshaw kept Birmingham within striking distance with three combined scoreless innings out of the bullpen. However, the Barons struggled to solve the Biscuits' pitching trio of left-handers Kenny Rosenberg and Dalton Moats and right-hander Tyler Zombro.

A run-scoring single off the bat of Luis Gonzalez in the seventh accounted for the lone RBI of the game for the Barons.

Moats (W, 1-0) earned his first victory of the season in relief for the Biscuits after he allowed one run in three innings of work.

Birmingham and Montgomery will continue their series with a 2:05 p.m. game Sunday at Riverwalk Stadium as Barons right-hander Felix Paulino (2-1, 3.13) opposes Biscuits left-hander Brendan McKay (0-0, 3.29).

Coverage of Sunday's game will begin at 1:50 p.m. on WJQX-FM 100.5 with the Coca-Cola Pregame Show.
