Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds won the series finale with the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday night with a 13-5 offensive onslaught. Delmarva (29-33) scored a season-high 13 runs in the victory to avoid a series sweep and snap a four-game losing streak.
The game began slowly with Kannapolis holding a 1-0 lead after four innings with a solo home run by Alexander Simon. Shorebirds' starter Lucas Long allowed just one run in the start, pitching a career-high six innings.
The outburst began with six runs in the fifth sparked by two Kannapolis errors. Phildrick Llewellyn belted a two-run double for his first hit as a Shorebird. Jared Breen smoked an RBI single to right field and later scored on a throwing error by Eddy Alvarez. Conor Bierfeldt knocked a two-run single up the middle to push his league-leading RBI total to 51.
Another error and two wild pitches allowed Delmarva to score another run in the sixth. Breen belted a bases-clearing double to highlight a four-run seventh inning, building an 11-2 lead.
Cam Kneeland and Derek Peterson lined back-to-back RBI doubles in the eighth inning to cap the scoring for the night. Delmarva finished with 13 runs though four Kannapolis errors led directly to seven unearned runs. Donnie Hart closed out the victory with a scoreless ninth inning, wrapping up the final home game of the first half with a 13-5 final.
Bierfeldt, Kneeland, Peterson, Llewellyn and Breen all contributed multi-hit games. Breen picked up four RBIs, and Llewellyn contributed three RBIs, both individual season-highs. The run total surpassed the Shorebirds' previous season-high as a team, 12 runs in a shutout victory in five innings at Savannah on April 28th.
Long improved to 2-1 for Delmarva, winning both starts as a Shorebird. Spencer Adams took the loss for Kannapolis, despite only two of his six runs allowed being earned.
The Shorebirds head to New Jersey for four games in three days with the Lakewood BlueClaws, beginning with a Wednesday doubleheader. Left-hander Brian Gonzalez (3-4, 4.91) starts the opener against Lakewood's Tyler Viza (4-1, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park.
