Charleston RiverDogs News Release
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Chris Breen's grand slam, two doubles, and career-high seven runs batted in along with Austin Aune's three-run homer, double, and four RBIs led the surge in the Charleston RiverDogs' 15-6 victory over the Asheville Tourists Monday night at McCormick Field.
The RiverDogs (31-33) wasted no time getting on the board in the series finale as they sent eight men to the plate and scored five in the first inning. A two-run double by Breen and a three-run homer by Aune gave the R'Dogs the early 5-0 advantage. Charleston added two more in the second on Angel Aguilar's RBI single and another RBI double by Breen.
Asheville (29-35) responded with five runs of their own over the next two frames. Sean Dwyer hit a two-run double in the second, and Josh Fuentes hit a two-run home run in the third to cut Charleston's lead to 7-5.
After a scoreless fourth, the RiverDogs had their second five-run inning of the game as eight batters came up once again in the fifth. Devyn Bolasky hit an RBI single with the bases loaded and nobody out to increase the lead to 8-5. After two consecutive strikeouts by Jorge Mateo and Aguilar, Breen stepped back into the box and slugged a grand slam over the fence in center field. It was the second granny this season; Dustin Fowler hit one on May 4th against Hickory.
Shane Hoelscher hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth for Asheville, but it was the last run they scored in the game. The RiverDogs piled on three more over the next two innings on a sixth inning RBI triple by Ryan Lindemuth, Aune's RBI double, and an Alexander Palma RBI single.
Matt Wotherspoon (1-0) was given plenty of support in his five innings pitched and battled to his first win as a RiverDog. Sam Howard (2-7) took the loss for Asheville and only lasted three innings.
The RiverDogs set season-high totals with 15 runs, 19 hits, and 10 extra base hits. The previous highs were set on April 19 with 13 runs on 17 hits against the Savannah Sand Gnats and eight extra base hits against Asheville on June 14. Breen's seven RBIs were also the highest total by a RiverDog this season.
