Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C - The Wilson Tobs batted around in three consecutive innings as they banged out 14 hits and earned a 13-7 victory over the visiting Martinsville Mustangs on Tuesday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.
Wilson (15-28, 6-9) trailed in the contest, 4-1 before scoring five runs in the fifth inning to turn the game around. Jackson Slaid delivered the big hit of the five-run fifth shooting a two-run double to the gap in right centerfield to help propel the Tobs to a lead they would not relinquish.
Martinsville (15-27, 6-8) scored six of their seven runs in the first five frames against Tyler Thompson (W, 1-2) but could not get any closer as Wilson reliever, Chris Armstrong (S, 1) pitched the final four innings while the Tobacconists scored a season high 13 runs en route to the six run victory.
Wilson will return to action tomorrow night at 7:05 when they travel to War Memorial Stadium to battle the Peninsula Pilots. The Tobs make their return to Fleming Stadium on Thursday night at 7:05 when they host the Petersburg Generals.
The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and CY Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
