Wilmington Sharks News Release

Wilmington, N.C. - A Grayson Atwood home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Wilmington Sharks (8-4, 23-15) to a 3-2 victory over the Edenton Steamers (10-5, 28-13) at Buck Hardee Field on Tuesday night.

The North Carolina Tar Heel entered the game as a pinch hitter for third baseman Brad Shaban in the seventh inning, and made head coach Ryan McCleney look like a genius for making the move. After Connor Mitchell led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, Atwood came up with two outs and blasted a line drive out of the park for his third long ball of the season.

Wilmington trailed 2-1 entering the ninth inning, with starter Mike Frank on the hook for the loss after allowing a pair of unearned runs in the seventh. Wes Hatley came on in relief with two outs and runners on second and third, then allowed one of his inherited runners to score on a single before sitting down his next seven batters to earn the win.

The Sharks had scored first, snapping a scoreless deadlock by stringing together four singles and a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. Casey Goss was the man who reached on a fielder's choice, and later became the man who scored the first run of the game.

With the contest concluding a four game home stand, the Sharks travel to Gastonia on Wednesday before returning to Buck Hardee Field for a tilt with the Florence RedWolves on Thursday.
