
Sharks Bite in the Ninth With Walk-Off Home Run

WILMINGTON, NC - Grayson Atwood hit a two-run walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth to give Wilmington (24-15, 8-4) a 3-2 victory over the Edenton Steamers (28-13, 10-5) on Tuesday night at Buck Hardee Field.
Jordan Egan (Norfolk State University) came into the game in the bottom of the ninth and walked Connor Mitchell to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout Wilmington had the tying run on second and two outs and Atwood provided the heroics.
Edenton took a 2-1 lead with two outs in the top of the seventh Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) singled. Wilber Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) reached on the error and Adam Kirsch (Florida International University) doubled home Fernandez to tie the game. Robbie Zinsmeister (Indiana State University of Pennsylvania) singled home the go ahead run one batter later for the 2-1 lead.
Against right-handed pitcher Troy Scribner (Sacred Heart University), it took Wilmington until the third inning before they got their first hit, an infield single. They took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth on three straight singles after Casey Goss reached on an infield single. Scott Coleman picked up the RBI single.
Scribner held the Wilmington Sharks at bay during his six innings of work. He retired the first eight Sharks of the game and allowed one run (earned) on five hits. He walked a batter and struck out seven Sharks in the 3-2 loss.
Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) and DJ Johnson (Mercer University) pitched scoreless innings to get the game to the ninth inning with a 2-1 Steamer lead.
The home run by Atwood gave Wes Hatley the win in relief for Wilmington; he improved to 5-1 on the season.
Adam Kirsch led the Steamer offense with a two-for-three night, including an RBI double and Wes Meadows snapped his nine game hitting streak with an 0 for four night.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
