Offensive Breakout for Hounds over Wolves

December 2, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Soo Greyhounds News Release

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- For ZACH SENYSHYN, his four goal performance was a career-best for the second year Hounds forward, while as a team their ten goals scored was the most this season.

The Hounds answered back quickly after the Sudbury Wolves took a first period lead on Wednesday, and along with scoring the next eight goals of the game the Hounds put a screeching halt to a four game losing streak by downing the their Northern Ontario rivals, 10 to 3.

"Offensively, certainly we kind of broke out and obviously on their end their goaltending struggled a little bit and I think if you asked David (Sudbury Head Coach David Matsos) they probably want a little bit more" began Greyhounds Head Coach Drew Bannister when asked about seeing the goals go in for the Hounds.

"Good for our confidence, no question about that we were able to score. Multiple guys scored it wasn't just a few guys.  We created opportunities where the score could have been higher but good for us to put ourselves in that position and we took advantage of goaltending that wasn't as hot as they probably expected it to be" he added.

The game was the start of a home stand that will see the Hounds play their final three games on home ice before the Christmas break.

It would be Sudbury's leading-scorer Dmitry Sokolov opening the scoring 5:39 into the first period, finishing off a play with Alan Lyszczarczyk and taking advantage of a Greyhound turnover to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

Under a minute later (6:35), LIAM HAWEL sprung ZACH SENYSHYN in all-alone where he burst in on netminder Zack Bowman and hesitated before lifting the puck over his glove hand to tie the game at one goal a side.

Then as the first period neared the midway point of the period the Greyhounds would net two more goals capitalizing on a Trenton Bourque double-minor.

First KEIGAN GOETZ converted a feed from GUSTAV BOURAMMAN and tapped home the second chance at 8:54 before COLTON WHITE's point shot made it through a crowd in front and the Hounds led 3-1.

Overage defenceman TYLER HORE notched his 1st goal of the season at the 12:12 mark following up on the initial shot by HAYDEN VERBEEK and that would spell the end of the night for Bowman between the Sudbury pipes.

Bowman was replaced by Matthew Menna after allowing four goals on six shots in the first period.

BORIS KATCHOUK scored five-hold at 12:42 as the Hounds led 5-1 after one period of play.

Along with firing twenty-shots on goal in the second period the Hounds scored three more times to build up a 8-1 lead on a pair of goals by ZACH SENYSHYN (2nd and 3rd of the night) and HAYDEN VERBEEK (on a rebound) before Sudbury would respond.

With under five minutes to play in the period Patrick Murphy put a hard backhand upstairs that wrapped around the upper pipes and out before Mikkel Aagaard converted on a turnover in the final minute as the Hounds led 8-3 heading into the third period.

"I thought it was sloppy at the beginning, even the third goal. There is no need for that. We're a team that wants to move the puck forward, there is no need for that" said Bannister when asked about his teams sloppy play near the end.

"I thought we were sloppy at times and quite honestly I thought we left our goalie out to hang on those goals.  On a night like that, our goaltenders in circumstances our goalies work hard for and you want to play a little bit harder away from the puck for those guys" he continued.

Early in the third, and with the Hounds shorthanded, netminder BRANDON HALVERSON showed his athletics after his pass went right onto the stick of Patrick Murphy before taking the opportunity right back with a diving stick save.

The Hounds increased their lead to 9-3 when HAYDEN VERBEEK finished off a clinic of passing between himself, BORIS KATCHOUK and BOBBY MACINTYRE before ZACH SENYSHYN finished off his four goal night at 16:49 of the period as the Hounds skated to the 10-3 victory.

With the win, the Greyhounds record improved to 10-13-3-0 on the season, good for 23 points.

"I think tonight that's what kinda take from it, it's a confidence builder for some of our guys.

Like you said we have struggled to score goals this year and that's the first game where we had a little bit of luck on our side" concluded Bannister.
