Attack Fall in Overtime to Bulldogs
December 2, 2015 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack lost a 2-1 heartbreaker when they kicked off a weekend roadtrip in Hamilton against the Bulldogs on Wednesday night.
With the teams combining for just two goals in regulation, overtime was needed to solve the 2nd meeting of the year between the Attack and Bulldogs, and it would be the home side who was victorious thanks to Adam Laishram's 2nd goal of the game.
Liam Dunda would pocket the only goal of the game for Owen Sound, while Michael McNiven turned aside 18 of 20 shots directed his way on the evening.
Hamilton opened the scoring just over halfway through the first period thanks to a redirection.
With Attack goalkeeper Michael McNiven screened, Bulldogs forward Adam Laishram was able to get his stick on a Jesse Saban point shot and tip it home with 6:03 left in the opening frame.
The game's next goal wouldn't come until early in the 3rd period, and when it did it would be shades of the contest's opener.
With the Attack looking for the equalizer, Jonah Gadjovich was able to shuffle the puck to the point and onto the stick of defenceman Damir Sharipzyanov who unloaded a slapshot towards the Bulldogs' cage. Screening Hamilton's Charlie Graham was Liam Dunda, who was able to get his stick on Sharipzyanov's howitzer and redirect it into the cage to tie the game at one.
The goal, Dunda's 4th of the season, would be registered at 3:49 of the frame and force the teams to decide the game in the extra frame.
It wasn't until 29 seconds were left in the overtime frame that the winner was scored, and it was a weird one off of the stick of Laishram to finish it off.
After making a goalline spin, the Bulldogs' forward fired the puck on net which appeared to bounce off of a player before squeaking through McNiven for the win.
Laishram's goal was enough to earn him Mac Taylor Corporation 1st Star of the Game while Liam Dunda was named 2nd star of the evening. Hamilton's Charlie Graham was given 3rd star of the game thanks to his 27 saves on the night as the Mark McDade Remax Shots on Goal finished at 28-20 for the Attack.
Owen Sound will now head south of the border for a pair of weekend games against the Erie Otters on Friday and Saturday. Puck drop at the Erie Insurance Arena is at 7:00pm on both nights, and the games can be listened to live on Kia of Owen Sound Terry's Trailer Service Bear Radio on 560 CFOS.
