Toledo Mud Hens News Release

Lawrenceville, GA - Ryan Carpenter picked up his first win on the mound since July 30, 2018, as the Toledo Mud Hens (8-14) notched a season-high 15 runs in the win over the Gwinnett Stripers at Coolray Field.

Ending the six-game road trip with its second win, Toledo has surpassed double-digit runs in just five games, finishing the month of April with a record of 4-9 away from home.

The Mud Hens would jump on top for the third consecutive time this series on Mikie Mahtook's two-run home run.

Mahtook came into the game leading the team in batting (.393), on-base percentage (.486) and OPS (1.093), collecting his second homer in his ninth appearance with Toledo.

The Mud Hens have scored first in seven games this season.

With one out and bases loaded in the second, Willi Castro drew the walk to bring home Pete Kozma for the 4-0 lead. Kozma tapped an RBI grounder to left field earlier in the inning with Victor Reyes standing on second.

Gwinnett went to the bullpen after Josh Lester recorded the fifth run for Toledo on a sacrifie fly to right field. Starter Kyle Wright threw 55 pitches, allowing five hits and eight earned runs.

Elian Leyva would finish out the inning but not until Harold Castro doubled to center field for three more added runs. It'd be the largest scoring margin by the Mud Hens this year since April 21.

Carpenter went three hitless innings before Rafael Ortega's liner dropped near the right field line for the standup double in the fourth. The 2011 Tampa Bay Rays seventh-round draft pick came into Sunday having pitched 20 combined innings in four previous starts.

Toledo led 11-0 in the fifth after a solo blast from Mahtook and RBI singles by Reyes and Chace Numata, who transferred from Double-A Erie on Friday, making his Triple-A debut two days later and going 3-for-4 with a double.

Mahtook finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and four runs. Reyes registered his second RBI in the sixth to complete Toledo's highest single-game run total.

Carpenter's outing would end before the eighth inning, allowing four hits and zero earned runs, walking one and striking out five on 91 pitches.

The first run scored by Gwinnett came on a double to left field by Jack Lopez off Zac Houston. Eduardo Jimenez replaced Houston with runners at the corners and two outs in the eighth, eventually giving up a three-run blast to Adam Duvall, who made it 12-4.

The Mud Hens responded with three runs in the ninth inning from Castro, Lester and Mahtook. Castro began the spree with a ground rule double to right-center. Seven of the nine batters in Toledo's lineup would garner at least one RBI and only one hitter didn't get a hit.
