Notes & Quotes: FC Cincinnati 1 - 4 New York City FC

August 17, 2019 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - New York City FC News Release

After a tough loss on the road last weekend against Atlanta United, the Boys in Blue were on the hunt to continue their climb up the Eastern Conference table with multiple games still in hand.

The last time these two teams met, NYCFC defeated FC Cincinnati 5-2 and though tonight's scoreline ended in similar fashion, this time around Cincy was energized by new coach Ron Jans, and started the night off aggressively looking to defend their turf.

An early slip from City earned Jans' side a penalty kick in the 24th minute, but Sean Johnson was there to keep things level.

The home team wasn't done though. They resumed their attacking effort, and Allan Cruz was able to get one past Johnson shortly after for the opening goal of the night in the 30th minute.

City answered right back when just two minutes later, Maxi Moralez raced through the midfield to find Taty Castellanos outside the box. The Argentine calmly collected and curled home his eighth goal of the season.

Then just two minutes before the end of first half stoppage time, Héber came up big for the team once again, pouncing to put one past 'keeper, Przemyslaw Tyton for his 11th goal of the season.

City took a 2-1 lead into the half and never looked back.

In the 71st minute, Taty Castellanos scored a first header off a corner of the season - much to the delight of the City bench.

NYC continued to push, adding a fourth and final goal on the night when Héber broke through Cincinnati's defense in the 89th minute to put the cherry on top of a sweet four goal win For The City.

New York City FC now turns attention to Wednesday night when we host the Columbus Crew at Yankee Stadium.

QUOTES

New York City FC Head Coach Domènec Torrent

On James Sands' injury...

"It's bad news for us. We have to check in New York. We have to wait at least two days, that is not good news for us because I love this player. We need this player. We need everybody, but especially this player. Sometimes the soccer is not fair with the players, and right now it's not fair with Jimmy. He deserves to play with our team. He's an amazing player. Sometimes that happens. That is soccer. Soccer is sometimes unfair with players, and that happened with Jimmy. It's bad news for us."

On if he has his team playing how he wants, heading to Columbus...

"Not exactly. We are much better. Much better. But not exactly, because I remember we play much better one month ago, but we are in the right way... It's better than last game for sure, but that's not exactly the best way to play. We played much better. I remember, for example, if you ask me about that, almost a perfect day was a game against D.C. in the cup. We short play short, when they are coming, you can play long after that. But ok, we are in the right way."

New York City FC Forward Héber

On how New York City FC tactical switch...

"In the beginning of the first half, I played like a winger, where (Alexandru) Mitriță played last game, so in the second half we changed a little bit. I played close to the 18-yard box. We played with three strikers, and I think this helped. I like to be close to the box."

On adjusting to MLS...

"I am very happy to have 12 goals. I am more happy, because I can help my team. If I have these 12 goals, it is because our team works hard. So I can't take the ball from Sean (Johnson) and dribble [around] everyone and score. About MLS, it's a very good league. It is amazing. Every game is full, the stadium, and the quality of players is good. Better than Croatia. So, I am very glad to be here."

On what this game does for his confidence...

"It is not only for me. It is for our team. So, when we win this type of game, away 4-1, it is very good for us. Especially for strikers. We say in Brazil, we live for the goals, we live for the scores. So, when we score, everyone is happy. I am happy. I am very happy for Taty (Valentin Castellanos) also, because everyone is in good shape and we can help the team."
