Not Much in the Tank, Goldeyes Beat by Fargo

August 30, 2015 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are still mathematically involved in the American Association Wild Card race and one could argue that there is always a chance.

However, the Goldeyes will have to be a lot better than they were on Saturday night as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks pounded out 16 hits en route to an 11-4 victory at Shaw Park.

Fargo scored a run in the first and two in the second and were off to the races. The visitors added four in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh as Fargo won its second straight this weekend at Shaw Park.

With their third straight loss, the Goldeyes fell to 42-49 on the season and a disappointing 17-24 at home. Winnipeg is now 8 ½ games back of Laredo in the Wild Card hunt with nine games to play.

"We're kind of beat up right now and we just didn't play very well in all aspects of the game," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "We didn't hit, we didn't defend the field and we didn't run the bases and you're not going to win very often when that happens.

"Kyle (starter Anderson) didn't have a good outing tonight. He just wasn't spinning them up there tonight and when we got behind we didn't hit well enough to come back. We had some pretty good ABs against a rookie relief pitcher in the ninth, but it was a little late. It's good to score some runs in the ninth. Maybe that will help us come out a little better tomorrow."

The Goldeyes were down 11-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth when they got things going against rookie Alex Kreis. Tillman Pugh led off with a walk and went to second on a walk to Brad Boyer. After Luis Alen popped out, James Boddicker singled home Pugh and then Adam Heisler doubled in Boyer. Casio Grider grounded out, but drove home Boddicker and then Reggie Abercrombie singled to score Heisler. It was a solid four-run ninth, but it was far from enough.

The Goldeyes finished with four runs on nine hits while Fargo had 11 runs on 16 hits. Boddicker led the Goldeyes with an RBI on a pair of hits in four trips to the plate. Heisler went two-for-five, drove in a run and scored a run and Casey Haerther had two hits in four at bats.

Fargo starter Ty Kelley (6-6, 3.98 ERA) pitched seven shutout innings to earn the victory while Goldeyes starter Anderson (4-6, 5.01 ERA) was tagged with the loss.

The Goldeyes and Fargo will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. CDT. Righthander Matt Jackson (8-8, 4.95 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while lefthander Tyler Alexander (4-5, 3.40 ERA) will take to the bump for Fargo. The game can be heard live on The Jewel 100.5 with Steve Schuster at the microphone.

Tickets for all of the Goldeyes final nine home games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on goldeyes.com, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
