'Hawks Fall 3-2 in Walk-Off Fashion to Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB - The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks let a one run lead slip away in the late innings and fell 3-2 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes in walk-off fashion before 5,014 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon game at Shaw Park in downtown Winnipeg.

Goldeyes' starter Matt Jackson started on the hill for the Fish and was dominant to say the least. The right-hander retired the side in the first inning on three pitches. He forced three fly ball outs in a half-inning that lasted less than three minutes. Jackson had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning as he had retired the first ten batters he faced until Drew Muren stepped to the plate in the fourth. Muren sliced an opposite field double giving the 'Hawks their first base runner of the game bringing Chad Mozingo to the dish. Mozingo proceeded to double off the wall in left as well allowing Muren to wheel home from second for his American Association leading 33rd double and 59th RBI of the season.

Winnipeg struck first the previous inning in the third frame on an Adam Heisler fielder's choice scoring Casio Grider who doubled earlier in the inning. Grider would have had an RBI but Mozingo relayed home 7-6-2 to catch Ryan Babineau who was racing home at the plate making it 1-1 after four innings.

Meanwhile RedHawks starter Tyler Alexander was just as good on the hill as his counterpart. Both starters went eight innings, but Alexander tossed nearly 30 more pitches than Jackson making his innings last longer. Before giving up the run in the third Alexander had only faced seven batters. After Grider crossed home he went on to retire the next ten straight before James Boddicker would single to left field in the bottom of the sixth.

Fargo-Moorhead would tack on another run in the fifth. Charlie Valerio led off the frame with a single and would score two batters later on a Ryan Pineda chopper sent up the middle making it 2-1 'Hawks.

Alexander continued to dominate. He utilized the strikeout and sat down the side in the seventh via the punch-out. He wound up with 11 total strikeouts, matching a career high (set back on August 15th...at Winnipeg), giving him 106 total on the season and keeping pace with the top four in the American Association. Alexander's strikeout ability is even more impressive considering he did not move into the rotation until June 24th.

Winnipeg got to the lefty in the eighth inning. Adam Heisler would double to left and proceed to steal third. Former big-leaguer Reggie Abercrombie then stepped to the plate and sent a base knock up the middle scoring Heisler and tying the game 2-2.

After Fargo-Moorhead failed to score in the ninth, Doug Simunic went with lefty Nick Cooney rather than closer Mike Nesseth for the ninth. Cooney's issued a leadoff walk to Josh Mazzola that came back to haunt the rookie. Tillman Pugh sacrificed Mazzola over and he would then advance to third on a wild pitch. With a runner just 90 feet from home, Brad Boyer delivered with a single up the middle scoring Mazzola and giving the Fish a 3-2 walk-off win.

Alexander takes the no-decision after going eight innings allowing just two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and eleven strikeouts. Cooney (1-2) takes the loss while Brendan Lafferty (3-3) earns the win for his work in the top of the ninth.

After having won 14 of 17 games before the final game with Sioux Falls in the last series, the 'Hawks have dropped two of their last four and slip to 39-53 while Winnipeg improves to 43-49 and evades their 50th loss of the season.

Fargo-Moorhead will send Taylor Stanton to the mound tomorrow night for the series finale. With a win, the 'Hawks will clinch their seventh consecutive series while a loss will mean a split. The game can be heard on 740 AM The Fan with Brad Anderson on the call and is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. with a 6:40 pre-game time.
