Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN - The Gary South Shore RailCats had "clunker" car night Saturday night at US. Steel Yard as a handful of lucky fans won a used car during the game with the New Jersey Jackals. The RailCats trailed early but then reeved up their new offensive engine like a new sports car off of the show room floor and fought back from an early four nothing hole to tie the game fifth. But the RailCats were forced to trade in the new wheels for some late pitching that sent the RailCats to the salvage yard in a 12-7 loss to the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League.
New Jersey got on the board in the fourth with a four run inning. Leandro Castro would lead off with a home run off of Fernando Gonzalez and it was 1-0. Matt Helms walked and after a strike out of Dvontrey Richardson Jared Schlehuber singled and came home on an RBI double from Tony Caldwell. Peter Mooney followed with a double and it was 4-0.
After a 1-2-3 top of the fifth from Gonzalez the RailCats struck for three runs dialing up the first of two long balls. Spencer Mahoney singled off of Jackals starter Shawn Sandford and was followed by a walk from Jarred Mederos. Jon Jones then sent a ball out of the "yard" in left to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Jackals got another run in the top of the sixth but the RailCats evened it all up at five. Dustin Geiger doubled to start the inning off of Sandford. After two outs Alex Hernandez drove Geiger home with an RBI single up the middle. Mahoney then followed with a triple and the game was tied.
The RailCats bullpen then could not execute a shutdown inning in the seventh. Matt Solter, who came in for Gonzalez in the sixth gave up the go ahead run on an RBI single from Matt Helms and the Jackals never looked back. The added another run in the eighth after Solter walked Schlehuber. Shawn O'Neill was brought in the face Caldwell who doubled to score Schlehber to make it 7-5.
Jose Sermo would cut the lead to one again in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run down the left field line. But New Jersey put the game away by loading the bases off of O'Neill with three consecutive walks. Helms hit a ball with the infield drawn in right to Alex Hernandez at second base who threw home to Jaime Del Valle to get the first out but the catchers throw to first went wide down to the Jackals bull pen allowing a run to score and it was 8-5.Box. The RailCats then loaded the bases by intentionally walking Richardson. Schlehuber then added a sac fly to right to make ot 9-5 and the knock out punch came next with a bases clearing triple by Caldwell and it was 11-5. The Jackals got one more with a Mooney RBI single off of O'Neill and it was 12-6. The RailCats got an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth for a 12-7 final.
Sanford (7-6) worked six for the win while Solter (0-1) was charged with the loss. The two teams wrap up their four game series Sunday afternoon at US. Steel Yard with game time at 2:10pm. The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online at RailCatsBaseball.com.
