North Division Leading Marlies End Road Trip And Return Home

BINGHAMTON SENATORS

The Marlies travel to the Utica Memorial Auditorium in New York for a battle with the Binghamton Senators - AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators - on Friday evening. This will be the second of four meetings between the clubs this season. On December 8, the Marlies defeated the Senators 2-1 in overtime when Derrick Walser scored his second overtime winner of the season. The Senators, 21-16-4-3, currently sit fifth place in the East Division and nine points behind Philadelphia for the division lead. The Marlies hope to continue their four-game winning streak after defeating all of their West Division opponents last week. Binghamton currently holds a 7-3-2-0 advantage this season over North Division opponents. Senators forward Josh Hennessy and defenceman Lawrence Nycholat lead the team with 33 points each. Hennessy has posted 11 goals and 22 assists while Nycholat has 10 goals and 23 assists. Toronto goaltender Scott Clemmensen recorded two of the Marlies wins last week, improving his record to 13-6-0 with a 2.57 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Binghamton Senators goaltender Jeff Glass has a record of 12-10-3 with a 2.45 GAA and a .923 save percentage.

Notables: Glass led the Canadian men's junior hockey team to the Gold medal at the 2005 World Junior Championships. He was also named the Canadian Hockey League's goaltender of the year for the 2004-05 season while playing for the Kootenary Ice and current head coach Cory Clouston. At the start of the season Denis Hamel was the all-time leader in points for the Senators with 236 (124 goals, 112 assists). Forward Nick Foligno was drafted in the first round (28th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators. He is the son of former Toronto Maple Leaf and current Sudbury Wolves (OHL) head coach Mike Foligno. The Marlies are 3-4-1-1 all-time against the Senators and have only earned one victory at home against them.

QUAD CITY FLAMES

The Marlies host the Quad City Flames - AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames - on Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum. The Marlies defeated the Flames 3-2 last Wednesday in Quad City. David Ling recorded a goal and an assist while John Mitchell posted the game-winning goal. The Flames, 19-18-2-5, are currently in seventh place in the competitive West Division and 19 points behind first place Rockford. The Marlies have the top penalty kill in the AHL at 87.2 %, while Quad City is ranked third in the league at 86.2 %. Quad City holds a 5-3-0-1 record over North Division opponents this season. Flames forward Grant Stevenson was named as the AHL Player of the Week and currently leads Quad City with 47 points (22 goals, 25 points) in 44 games. He is currently on a eight-game point streak where he has collected 16 points (10 goals, six assists). Quad City rookie goaltender Matt Keetley maintains a record of 6-5-2 with a 2.73 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

Notables: Flames forward Kris Chucko is a former first round draft choice (24th overall) of the Calgary Flames in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Krys Kolanos has played in 115 NHL games recording 35 points (17 goals, 18 assists). Brett Sutter is the son of Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter. Forward Brandon Prust won the Memorial Cup in 2005 while playing with the London Knights of the OHL.

MARLIES QUICK HITS

The Marlies end their season-long eight game road trip on Friday evening in Utica. The Marlies will have travelled just over 4,490 miles during this tenure that began on January 10 in Milwaukee. .

Staffan Kronwall returned to the line-up on January 15 against Iowa. He scored the overtime goal in the 2-1 win. He hadn't played in a game for the Marlies since December 8.

Robbie Earl's assist in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Quad City was his 31st point which is a personal career-high in points.

Scott Clemmensen returned to his hometown of Des Moines, Iowa in Tuesday's game. A ceremony was held during the first intermission involving his parents and former coaches from high school and junior that saw a banner unveiled, the announcement of Des Moines retiring his number and a proclamation by the Mayor of Des Moines to make January 15, 2008 Scott Clemmensen Day.

Rbk/VECTOR AHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEE

For the week ending January 20, 2008, the Toronto Marlies nominated goaltender Scott Clemmensen for consideration as the Rbk/Vector AHL Player of the Week. A native of Des Moines, Iowa, Clemmensen recorded two wins in the two games he played last week. He posted a goals against average of 1.00 and a save percentage of .957. This week's award was ultimately won by Quad City's Grant Stevenson.

MARLIES IN THE COMMUNITY

Forwards David Ling and Brent Aubin and defenceman Phil Oreskovic will be appearing at St. John Bosco School to promote the team's anti-bullying message this afternoon. Forwards David Ling and Michel Leveille will be signing autographs in the fan zone outside of gate one at Air Canada Centre in advance of the Maple Leafs home game against Washington this evening.
