Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk ran its winning streak to a season-high four games with a doubleheader sweep of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Saturday night.
In game one, Tommy Hunter went the distance, allowing six hits and a walk as Norfolk won 3-1.
Hunter (1-0) allowed all six hits over the first three innings, but he escaped any large damage by inducing double play grounders in each of the first three frames. After yielding a leadoff single in the third, Hunter retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced to earn the complete game victory.
The Tides gave Hunter all the run support he would need in the first inning, as Xavier Avery led off the frame with a single and scored on a one-out triple by Lew Ford. Ford then scored one batter later on an RBI single by Miguel Tejada, giving Norfolk a 2-0 lead against Nelson Figueroa (3-2).
After the Yankees pulled within 2-1 on an RBI single by Francisco Cervelli, Tejada extended Norfolk's lead to 3-1 in the sixth with an RBI single. The single scored LJ Hoes, who had reached on a leadoff double - his first hit at the Triple-A level.
In the nightcap, Norfolk pounded out six extra-base hits en route to a 5-1 win.
Norfolk jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead off of Mike O'Connor (1-2), as Jamie Hoffmann and Jai Miller connected on run-scoring singles. Norfolk extended its lead in the fourth inning, as Hoes led off the inning with a triple and scored on a double to left by Hoffmann. Tejada then lined a double down the left field line to give Norfolk a 4-0 advantage.
Zach Clark (2-0) was the beneficiary of the offense as he won his second straight start since being promoted from Double-A Bowie. Clark scattered seven hits while striking out three over 5.1 innings, throwing 50 of his 80 pitches for strikes.
The two clubs will continue their six-game, four-day series on Sunday afternoon, with a doubleheader slated to start at 1:15. Steve Johnson and Eddie Gamboa will take the mound for Norfolk against right-handers Adam Warren and Jason Bulger.
