Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 7-3 loss to the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night. Indians first baseman Jeff Clement hit for the cycle in four at-bats in the Indianapolis win.
Syracuse (26-29) struck first with a pair of second-inning runs against Indianapolis left-hander Jeff Locke. Tyler Moore led off the inning with a double to left field, and two batters later, third baseman Carlos Rivero slammed a triple to center field to score Moore. The three-base hit was Rivero's first triple with Syracuse. After Seth Bynum was hit by a pitch, catcher Jeff Howell singled to right field, scoring Rivero for a 2-0 lead. The single extended Howell's hit streak to seven games.
But Indianapolis (32-23) answered right away with a second-inning run against Syracuse starter Tanner Roark. Clement doubled to center field and third baseman Yamaico Navarro singled him home, slicing the lead to 2-1.
The Indians then took over the lead in the third inning. After a Kris Watts single and Jeff Locke strikeout, left fielder Alex Presley slugged a home run to right field. The two-run blast gave Indianapolis the lead for good.
The Indians would add a sixth-inning run courtesy of Clement, who had singled in the third inning after his second-inning double. This time, the slugging first baseman homered to left field off of right-hander Erik Arnesen, extending the Indianapolis lead to 4-2.
Indianapolis finished its side of the scoring in the seventh inning with a two-out rally against Chiefs left-hander Atahualpa Severino. With two runners on, Starling Marte's infield single to second base scored Alex Presley all the way from second. Clement then followed with a two-run triple to deep left-center field, completing the cycle in four at-bats.
Syracuse would tack on an eighth-inning run when Bynum singled in Moore, cutting the deficit to 7-3. However, Howell flied out with two runners on base to end the threat.
The Chiefs and Indians will play the third game of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:15. Right-hander Mitch Atkins is scheduled to throw for Syracuse against Indianapolis right-hander Daniel Cabrera.
