Knights Beat G-Braves 5-2 on Saturday, Sweep Two-Game Series
June 2, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
(Lawrenceville, GA) - With each start, Terry Doyle is becoming one of the most consistent pitchers in the International League. On Saturday, that trend continued.
Doyle won his fourth straight start, Dan Johnson hit his third home run in two days, and the Charlotte Knights earned a two-game series sweep over the first place Gwinnett Braves on Saturday with a 5-2 win at Coolray Field. The win pulled the Knights to just one-half game behind Gwinnett for first in the South Division.
After nearly throwing a no-hitter in his last start, Doyle (5-3, 3.04) allowed just two runs over six innings on Saturday en-route to his fifth win of the season. He gave up just four hits while walking none and striking out six. Doyle has now allowed just four runs over his last four starts (28.2 innings) and has been dominate in each of those starts.
He started the win-streak back on May 17 with a seven-inning complete game. He followed that up with eight innings of two-run ball for a win over Durham. In his last outing, he went to the eighth inning with a no-hitter -- settling for a 7.1 inning one-hit performance.
As for his Johnson, he too picked up right where he left off.
In the opening game on Friday, Johnson hit two home runs off of Braves starter Jair Jurrjens. The two home runs for Johnson pushed his season total to 13.
On Saturday, the 2010 International League MVP homered in the third inning off of Gwinnett starter Kris Medlen (0-1, 15.43). Johnson finished the game 1-5 and is now hitting .293 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs. He's among the league leaders in home runs, RBIs, walks and on-base percentage.
Donnie Veal and Brian Omogrosso combined to throw three scoreless innings. Omogrosso, who did not allow a run in the final two innings, notched his first save of the season.
Medlen allowed four runs on five hits over 2.1 innings and was saddled with the loss in his first game with Gwinnett this season.
Greg Golson and Josh Phegley each chipped in with three hits each. Golson went 3-5 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
The two teams will now shift their series to Knights Stadium and battle on Sunday at 5:15 p.m. Sunday is another Family Day at Knights Stadium, courtesy of BB&T. Taking the mound for the Knights will be RHP Dylan Axlerod. The G-Braves will counter with top prospect Julio Teheran.
On Monday, the Knights will welcome members of the Carolina Panthers to Knights Stadium. Players from the Panthers will take batting practice and sign autographs for fans. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. on Monday.
